Intel ISEF/STS?

How much does placing at ISEF help you in the admissions process? I've been a finalist since 9th grade, but because we're in NM, there's not too much competition… But last year I placed 2nd in Physics and Astronomy, and I'm hoping that helps me out a bit. I don't expect to get STS semi, but would that also help if I were to get it?

Also, what about research? I'm planing to submit my research report the same one submitted for STS, along with a rec letter from my mentor and an essay putting it in context of future goals and whatnot. If nothing else, will these at least make my application stand out a little?

Thanks!

It’s a very prestigious competition and you should be proud to have been a participant. It will help, indeed, to further show your passion for science as well as your desire to expand and share your projects.

If your name is on this list: [Intel STS - 2011 Semifinalists - Society for Science & the Public](http://www.societyforscience.org/page.aspx?pid=710), or this list: [Society for Science & the Public - Page](http://apps.societyforscience.org/sts/70sts/finalists.asp)), it will definitely help.

Gibby, that’s STS. The OP is a ISEF winner (STS is only for seniors so no applying seniors actually have that award yet)

I’m actually hoping - and considering the caliber of most submitted projects, hoping with minimal prospects - to be able to submit “semi-finalist” in the mid-year report, as those results come out on January 11, 2012. I suppose that in the event that the late nights really paid off - this time, near 0 hop - I may also be able to submit something on January 25th, 2012, which is when finalists are announced.

Best of luck to you! (Of the 4 semifinalists I know from last year, 2 are at Harvard. The other two are at Duke and Johns Hopkins.)
