Intellectual Safety Schools?

Do any of you guys know any colleges that offer rigorous programs but are less hard to get into? Please let me know because I want to start my safeties list very soon. So far my list is filled with tough schools and stuff.

I'm trying to look at guidbooks and thing of the sort. Do you have any recommendations as to how to get started? I think i'm just nitpicky about colleges that are less rigorous because I want a challenge.

Hampshire College was one of my safeties, and it's definitely intellectual.

depends on how good your stats are, St. John's College in New Mexico and Maryland is not extraordinarily difficult to get into but is one of the most intellectual and demanding schools in the country

If you have really good stats, you may be able to consider Reed a safety. But I'm talking stats that would even impress CC members, which is tough to do. And yes, Reed is intellectual.

UChicago bends on stats more than most top schools.

Grinnell maybe?

Many LAC schools that aren't in the top 20

You're all really helpful! mju93, I want to attend a liberal arts school so this is a good tip. Kheryn, I was looking at Hampshire but I was concerned about how far away it is from the city and whether it has updated facilities or not...it seems a bit obscure to me! Please get back! Plus how is St John? How are their facilities and is their special traditional book-learning helpful?

what are your stats like? a safety for one could be a reach for another

If you are a girl add Wellesley and Smith, Barnard if you want a big city and want to say you go to Columbia!

My roommate suggests Willamette.

My stats are not spactacular but I have ecs to show for it. My average is about 3.75 or so, my SATs, i'm hoping to break 2000, and my APs will total 4 (for my school that's a lot since my school is new and doesn't offer many APs) I actually started by Ec list. I'll post it up after this one...

Whew...that reminds me that I should get a chancing done. But i'm just so nervous about that...

Female? Bryn Mawr is great (don't know if it's a safety), Bard, Sarah Lawrence are all great and look for intellectual self-starters.

Just for reference, the schools i'm thinking seriously about are:

Wellesley College (ED)
Smith College
Mount Holyoke College
Bryn Mawr College
Barnard College
Colgate University
Kenyon College
Middlebury College
Bowdoin College
Boston University
Brandeis University

As you can see, I seriously need safeties and match schools

Some ideas for possible matches/safer bets for your list: Mills College in California, Earlham in Indiana, Denison in Ohio, the College of Wooster in Ohio, Lawrence and Beloit, both in Wisconsin, Goucher in Maryland, Hobart & William Smith in NY, Skidmore in NY, Bard in NY, Wheaton College in MA, Dickinson/Franklin & Marshall/Muhlenberg/Allegheny, all in PA.

Sarah Lawrence is definitely a BRILLIANT school (of course, I'm a bit biased since that's where I'm going.) But I don't know if it's a safety. It sounds pretentious since that's where I'm going, but I hear they're really looking for a particular type of applicant, not just based on achievements.

And, back to Hampshire, those are exactly the reasons why I decided not to go. They all seem like wonderful people, but... well, they have a farm on campus. I'm not really one for rural, middle of nowhere land. Sarah Lawrence is closer to the city, which is why I went there.

If you want the city and are into the trend of "freeing, intellectual" schools, check out The New School's Eugene Lang. It's smack in New York City.

bump!!! I really need help on this issue

Thanks for your help carolyn and Kheryn! Anyone else? (I'm pretty nervous about where i'll end up. I think my esteem is hitting the bottom)

Wellesley College (ED): consider it a done-deal
Smith College: good chance
Barnard College: good chance
Middlebury College: good chance

You’re fine - Just relax and enjoy your summer
