I know there is not one typical student type at Bowdoin, but are most of the students the serious type or well balanced with academics and fun?

I'm a current Bowdoin student and have been very impressed with how articulate and intelligent the students are (not surprising given the admissions process) but most are still very sociable and like to have fun (not necessarily the alcohol variety either, but their is a strong drinking presence on campus, to be sure). Though every student is unique in his or her own way, I've found that most really have found out how to work hard but still keep active social lives.

Are Bowdoin students very competitive with one another, or are they more cooperative with one another?

The competitive atmosphere at Bowdoin, at least academically, is very low key. Students don't focus on doing better than one another and don't seem to care very much about the academic prowess of others. One of the great aspects of Bowdoin culture, in my view at least, is that students place academics first but are still very social and comfortable with themselves. Classes can be difficult and challenging, of course, and the stress that stems from that is to be expected but the student body overall is laid back.
