Can I help do research in subjects outside of my major?

I have a range of interests and I would like to be able to do research with fellow students outside of my specific field.

...like a computer science major helping out in some neuro-science or astronomy research.

I’m sure you can do applied research, that’s how bioinformatics got started. Plus, being good with computers can only be a plus in that respect. I’m sure it would be fine. You’ll just have to go marketing yourself as opposed to CS research which might be easier to become a part of.

A CS friend of mine is doing work with a doctor at the hospital on neuro stuff. He was recruited for his CS work, but he was interested in the work too, and it’s been a great halfway point for him. Like Hazel said, being a CS major will open doors into any field you wish…almost every field has some sort of CS behind it. Best of luck to you, you have a great future ahead of you if you want to mix CS and something else. CS kids often have trouble nailing down a certain job or industry, but it looks like you’ve got your interests as a guide
