Are there a lot of opportunities for undergraduates to conduct research with faculty, etc. at UVA? I'm a computer science/math major, and I really look forward to doing some original research.

I don’t know about doing math/cs research, but I have a friend who was able to do biology research first year first semester. In general, all you have to do to get into a lab is email the professor, who will invite you in for an interview to see if you would mesh well with the lab topics and to judge your dedication. I’ve heard that in your later years, professors often portion off pieces of their research and let you run with that.

There are plenty of opportunities to get involved with research. I’m a First-Year and I have my own project in a lab at the School of Medicine.

Math and CS are harder since they require more background experience to be able to do. I think it really depends on how much experience you have and who you contact. I’m sure if you’re persistent enough that you’ll find somebody quickly. Don’t be too eager to accept whatever offer comes around though because this person is going to be your mentor and is going to help you grow as a scientist.
