I'm interested in joining a fraternity at uiuc but I was wondering about the housing. Since the recruitment is in the fall, and I have to live in a frat house, where am I going to live before I pledge and join a fraternity? If I lease for private housing does that mean that I have to also pay for fraternity housing? This is my biggest concern because I don't know if I should apply already for private housing.

You will not like in the Frat house your first year. Get university housing. Worry about the Frat Second year

Why would I not like it? You get to meet new people and have fun experiences. And isn’t it better to join as a freshman?

I think he means you won’t live in a fraternity house your first year, which would be correct. At least for your first semester, you need to live in either University Housing or Private Certified Housing (which is basically a dorm not owned by the university but approved for housing students). You will move into your frat house in your sophomore year most likely, or sometimes in your second semester.

So, how would moving into a frat house second semester work? Wouldn’t I still be paying for my dorm?

I’m not entirely sure, but I know there are provisions to transfer your housing contract from University Housing to Private Certified Housing. Perhaps you could do something similar with a frat house. But as far as I know almost all Greeks move into their houses sophomore year, so don’t worry about it.

Thanks!
