I was wondering if freshmen have to live in dorms or approved housing? I really don't want to live in a dorm. I know people say it's a good experience and all, but it's just not my thing. I know there are approved apartments or whatever that you can live in, so is this my only other choice? Or can I still get an apartment somewhere else?

Freshman are required to live either in the dorms or in private certified housing. Exceptions are for those who were living in the local area when they were accepted and older freshman, e.g., veterans returning to college after service.

Alright, thanks. Do you know if it's hard to get into the private housing?

Depends on when you apply. If you have not applied yet and are attending in Fall, chances are that many are already full or close to full. You just need to check. Also, a well-known "secret": if places are full, get on the wait-list (it may cost some dollars). Between mid-July and early August, large numbers of those on wait-lists get in because many who locked in private certified housing decide to go elsewhere (other colleges, sophomores or higher going for regular apartments, and some even decide to take dorms). You can apply both for dorm and private certified and before semester begins can choose one or the other (for example, if you get invitation off of wait-list at private certified) and agreement between UIUC's residence halls (dorms) and private certified housing requires one to release you from contract if you switch to other before semester begins.

Thanks for the help. So do I just call them to get on the waiting list or what?

The private certified housing units each has its own application. Those are on-line at the particular units site. You need to apply to either get housing or get on a wait-list

Yeah, I finally found the applications after looking at their sites. So am I just on the waiting list automatically by applying? Or do I have to wait until after the housing assignments come out to get on the waiting list?

Is it difficult to get assigned in Hendrick House?

N if u were admitted to the school of engineering, which is the best place a freshman would find (one who does not like to party much)?

hendrick house is a good option. i heard it is quiet and has alot of engineering students in it.
