Hey CC,

I'm a sophomore in high school and I am interested in pursuing an internship, either this year or this summer. I am deeply interested in anthropology as well as medicine, and I am looking to maybe start a career that involves either of these two pursuits.

I want to make the most of my sophomore year--taking AP or honors classes (probably AP), getting a job or an internship, participating in extracurriculars and, put simply, figuring out what I want to do with my life.

I was wondering how feasible this would be for me and what I should be focusing on this year. Should I be looking at a different area? I am a driven student, but I feel quite lost and I'm not sure what I should be doing. I don't have much parental guidance or outside help, and I come from an economically disadvantaged background.

Thanks for any help.

Its great that you’ve already got goals early on. Most don’t feel the ‘resume packing’ adrenaline rush till Jr year.

Your career choices are great, though anthropology is dying a bit. Most hospitals do offer some sort of HS summer internship, especially univ hospitals.

Your classes would still be the same pretty much. Depending on which field of anthropology interests you (cultural anth = international relations, social anth = socio/psychology) you’ll just want to stock up on social sciences. Medicibe would require all the sciences and anatomy classes.

Obviously, do the basics. Load up on APs and Honors (and Running Start if available). Join clubs you like, even if they don’t relate to your majors.

Try out scholarships, apply for internships, volunteer, travel abroad, and maybe even get a job (or girlfriend).

The different forum categories at CC offer numerous ways to do something for college. And of course, never ever leave yourself with nothing to do.
