I'm really interested in interenational relations, especially in Asia.
I want to be involved in a group or program where you talk about it and
get to meet people who really know and care about it.
Any suggestions about what I should do over the summer?
the only thing I know is that there are Model UN and some conferences
for high school students but our school doesn't have a Model UN club or
anything(I might as well make one this year:)
Also I've heard a lot about internships in science department but
so little in internationl relationship or world history.
Know any??
oh, and I'm thinking of forming a club to publish a small book about
international controversies and what it's like to be a international student and
stuff. maybe they'll let me make a copy of some and place it at our library.
you think it's good idea??

are you looking for a summer program? or just suggestions for extracurricular activities? I notice that you are in Korea -- so summer programs in the US would be expensive, but a great oppportunity and exposure for you. Can your parents afford a summer program? If so and that is what you are looking for I can suggest some opportuities

well, it's just that I'm going to the US this summer and will stay there
and planning to go to college there.
So since school in Korea doesn't support any of my ideas,
I just want to know if there's anything I can do,
summer programs especially that deals with what i'm interested.

ok -- let me see if I understand. You are coming to the US this summer and are looking for a summer program? And you will be staying in the US and going to school here next fall?

What cost range are you looking at for the summer program?

Global Scholar's probably the most well known international relations summer program

I'm sorry if i got you confused.
I'm currently in Korea. but will go to US this summer and will
stay there for 3 years and graduate HS in US and go to US college.
So I can start anything that starts this Summer so I can participate
in the program and go straight to Florida where I'll go to HS.
And for the cost, anything that's not as expensive as the one Harvard has.

ProcrastiNate/ thanks!

agathayu -- sorry for all the questions, but the answers make a difference.

one final question -- than I promise you will get some good suggestions.

What grade will you be going into next year in high school?

If I understand your post correctly, you will have 3 years left of high school? So you are a freshman this year? If that is correct, it will really limit you on what programs you can attend -- many of the top programs I am thinking about are looking to admit kids who are juniors this year, and they sometimes admit kids who are sophomores who have really high stats.

Also -- I know that you are interested in International Relations, and that is great (so is my son). But -- if you really are a freshman and your choice of summer programs is limited by that, would you consider a summer program that would work on an area of weakness you have? Because many of the summer programs for younger kids (freshman and sophomore) aren't as available, I would suggest that you consider other subjects. If you can find one on international relations, great -- but if not -- is there an academic area that needs some work? Writing/English is one that many kids need help with.

I will do some research and look for your answer.

it's so nice of you to be willing to look for programs for me.
I will enroll as a sophomore next year, which makes me a freshman, you are correct.
I understand that I have limited option for summer programs.
My biggest weakness would have to be the lack of background knowledge
on US history/government and literature. Also in korea, we are not trained to write all that much as American does so definitely lack of writing skills as well.

And another thing, besides summer programs, what do you think I can do
as a freshman or sophomore during semesters?
Model UN??

Take a look at CTD in Chicago -- they have 3 week sessions and you could take 2 sessions (back to back) and take 2 classes.

take a look at non-fiction writing and geopolitics.

If you are weak (or not as experienced) in writing, I would strongly suggest a writing class. Poor writing skills will sink you faster than anything in school, and if you are looking ahead to college -- those grades from 10th grade and up are absolutely critical. Since writing is a part of English and Social Studies and even Science, poor writing skills can really impact your grades.

some other possibilities are:

CTY http://cty.jhu.edu/summer/index.html

or check out some of the boarding schools and attend their summer program. look at exeter, andover and others.

You will have more options next year when you are older -- but this year you will really be limited.

so nice of you thank you thank you!!!!

for during the year, model un, debate, and jsa are all good things to get inolved with

What's jsa??

Check out Andover Summer Session. Offers courses in IR, Speech and Debate, etc.

jsa stands for the Junior State of America (jsa.org) its a year-round chapter based political activism organization...the sponsoring organization - the Junior Statesmen Foundation - runs summer programs, you can find the info off of jsa.org
