Over the summer, my school changed its class rank policy. Now seniors can choose to either send their class rank to schools or not to. Because I will probably end up being ranked about 15 out of 500 in a highly competitive high school, with all As and A-s in pretty much the most rigorous course load available, I will send my rank to most colleges I apply to.

However, I want to apply to at least one major reach, most likely Yale. In the past, Yale and schools like it have only accepted kids from our school ranked in the top three. My question is, do you think it is a good idea to withhold my class rank from my Yale application?

Doing so would prevent Yale from discounting my application because my class rank is not within the range they have historically looked for from my school. On the other hand, I am very proud of my high rank, Yale might not think much of the difference between 3 and 15 (which is not much), and they might see through my attempt to "trick them." Since the difference between 1 and 15 is a little more than a tenth of a point, I would not want to harm my chances because, for example, they took one less elective than me.
