I found this thread with scores from 2009, and I thought it would be interesting to look at what the trend has been for the schools over the last three years. I’ve listed the 2012 stats first, then the 2009 stats, then the comparison. If the Boarding School Review #s were older than a year, I tried to find newer ones, but was only successful in a few instances.

Some of my observations: In just three years, competition has dramatically increased for admission into the top boarding schools. The lowest SSAT percentile in 2009 was 60%; now it is 65%. Acceptance rates are down an average of 5% in the schools on the top 50 list. Only 5 of the 50 schools saw their acceptance rates go up. Correspondingly, the lowest SAT score for the top 50 in 2009 was 1830; now it is 1850.

Some of the schools statistics have changed so dramatically I think it must have been a mistake either in 2009 or now.

thanks for finding and posting these data. Interesting. I had not realized Exeter broke thru TJ for highest SAT score in 2012, but it seems the years have a fair amount of variability.

It is interesting that TJ fell by 100 points - that’s quite a bit. It is also interesting to me that SAT scores don’t connect directly with the perceived prestige of that the acronym schools have. Concord (acceptance rate 32%), TJ, and Linden Hall don’t seem to have the kids breaking down their gates like the GLADCHEMMS schools…I wonder why?

^^^^^

I have heard that Linden Hall is a “globally focused campus” and admits applicants with that goal in mind. The high SAT scores probably correlate to the recruitment from cultures with an emphasis on achievement in those areas.

I knew NMH was getting more competitive, but WOW, it has really dropped down there into the >30% range and top 30 finish in admit rate. Impressive.

@RuralMama

TJ (Thomas Jefferson) does not have kids breaking down the doors to get in because you have to live in their district - it is an amazing, test entry public school. Wish there were a lot more like it all over the country.

@2prepMom-

I think you’re thinking of Thomas Jefferson in NJ. This one is a boarding/day school in MO.

[Thomas Jefferson School :: About TJ :: An Unmatched Tradition](http://www.tjs.org/)

FYI: When they are referring to ‘TJ’ in this thread, they are referring to the Thomas Jefferson School of Science and Technology in Fairfax County, VA. TJ is a public magnet school often rated the number one high school in America, with the highest SAT scores of any school of it’s size in the United States, public or private, including the top private boarding schools. Their website is here: [TJHSST - Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology](http://www.tjhsst.edu/) . In order to attend TJ, you have to actually live in Northern Virgina, take the TJ entrance exam, write essays and student profiles, get letters of recommendations, and all of the usual things that elite private schools require. TJ admission is strictly based on merit. They admit over 400 students annually out over over 3,300 applications. There is no consideration other than academic merit. There are no ‘hooks’, ‘legacies’ or ‘racial/ethnic preferences’. They don’t care how well their football team does.

Northfield Mt Hermon reduced the size of their student body, thus the acceptance rate had to decrease if number of applications was stable.

The average SAT score for 2012 for Thomas Jefferson HS for Science and Technology in Virginia was 2186. Google it.

I would like to knowvyour suggestions. Thanks

Lol, my mom went to hockaday in 5th through 9th grade

I live in Dallas, not too far from Hockaday. They don’t have many boarders. The last time I talked to a student she said there was about 120 boarders. It’s a really nice school, but I didn’t want to a all girl school plus it’s too close to home.

@2prepMom
TJ, the public magnet, is in Virginia. My cousins went there are loved it!
