Here’s what I decided to do:
Chose Economics as my major off the waitlist. Requested a major change into ECE or CS(a long shot probably but I figured it was worth the attempt). I did some thinking and I do like Computer Science slightly over business.
If my major change request is not successful I will unfortunately attend the ‘other’ university in Texas for computer science in their engineering department.
Good luck to you in your transfer into McCombs!! You deserve to get in!
For y’all that are applying for internal transfer, where is your GPA going to be at, If you don’t mind me asking. Mines going to be anywhere from a 3.7-3.8 depending on how grades work out semester. I’ve been hearing different things from people on what is a comfortable GPA to be at, so just wanted to see where others were at as well. Thanks!
@Jake18 I’m probably gonna be in the 3.8 range by the end of this semester. I’ve heard that 3.7 and above puts you in the safe zone, but obviously, the higher your GPA, the better.
@BurntOrange27 how did you find out that EDP 371 can be substituted as your business stat course, I checked and it said business stat was required. Not saying your wrong but I was just wondering
@Jake18 I’m looking at a 3.75. I probably feel more confident about it than I should just because I havn’t heard of anyone below a 3.7 not getting in, but I would feel even more comfortable with a 3.8…
@Goulddigga First, great user name hahahah! Second, for EDP 371, I’ve had multiple friends who transferred that class over into McCombs. If I get into McCombs, I can give you an update if that class transferred over.
Now, my summer will consist of me stressing over if I got in or not.
@BurntOrange27 Hi there! I’ve been reading your comments and would greatly appreciate some advice if you can give it! I unfortunately got CAP’d (high school senior) despite great stats but a little outside top 7% I’m from Houston but will be doing CAP at UTEP just simply because it was the cheapest option and I have every intention of getting around a 4.0 and moving to UT. I want to get into McCombs but I also love Economics. I was going to just do Economics out of CAP since it’s guaranteed but, I really want to get into McCombs. I messed up and didn’t schedule the Calculus Placement test in time before orientation/registration. So I’m doing precal->Calc 1 rather than Calc 1->2…Annoying but I can’t get out of it. So I’m planning on knocking Calc 2 out at HCC the summer after my CAP year. When is the soonest I can apply to McCombs? And will having good grades from UTEP and taken Calc 2 at a CC influence the decision? Also, if I do get lucky enough and land McCombs, is it possible to do an Econ minor or double Major? Thanks!
@habache622, I know nothing about UTEP, but why can you not take the placement test sometime over the summer? And then change your schedule to Calc 1 first semester, Calc 2 second semester?
@lots2do registeration for CAP kids=June 22nd calc placement test has to be taken in house in July or august or early June but I can’t make it since I’m from Houston. I don’t know how schedule changes work in college but if I can take it and just change my schedule I definitely will
I believe transfer applications into McCombs are accepted every spring (something like March-May), so basically its once a year. It sounds like you will need to transfer into Economics (you’ll need Calc & Eco there too) and then try to get into McCombs at the end of your sophomore year. With Economics, all of what you have taken will also be applicable to a freshman McCombs person too so not a lot of wasted work if you do get in. However you will be behind on some sophomore level classes and will have to do summer school (or go another year) to catch up. For example Accounting 1 & 2, and BA 1 & 2, are classes that all McCombs sophomores take.
@texansfan1 Interesting. So I would have a chance of getting in after sophomore year even though I would not have accounting 1 & 2 or BA 1 & 2 completed? How is that so?
Because they likely wouldn’t count you as a sophomore. You would be considered a freshman and start on a 5 year plan. It doesn’t matter where you think you are credits wise, its where you are in their degree process. What they really care about is your grades. You really should ask these questions of McCombs Admissions, however this is what I think.
Also, I’ve read on the UT website (somewhere) that Economics majors can do a McCombs minor if they have a UT GPA of 3.0 and an Economics classes GPA of a 3.0… Does anyone know anything about this?
@habache622 I hope all your questions were answered. A little advise I would give you if you’re adamant about being in the Business school, I would take accounting 1 and 2 over the summer at ACC or HCC. Also, if you get into McCombs, the second summer session classes will be available for you, so you can knock out some classes then if you want to graduate on time. I really want to graduate with all of my friends (lame, I know) so I’m taking 5 classes over the summer to make up for my slack. You would just need to ask the professor if its cool with him (got that info from my counselor and my friends who did the same thing as me).
@BurntOrange27 Thanks! That sounds like the goal I’m going to aim for then. I didn’t know how useful CC’s could be in all of this. And yeah I’d love to graduate on time too, it’s just a lot better. Good luck to you as well!
One clarification. The Business Foundations Certificate is 6 classes, but no the same ones you would take in McCombs. For example, its ACC 310F instead of 311 & 312, so the material is covered but at a higher level, which makes it easier. Also it contains 1 Economics class not two. Taking both ACC 311 & 312 (or the equivalent) is not required if you want to go the Business Foundation route. This is basically a business minor.
@BurntOrange27 Congratulations! I got in as well!Do you know if you have to wait until June 10th to officially accept the decision and have the major changed on your RIS info sheet, if you are planning to only register for fall classes(no summer sessions)? I think it said something like that in the acceptance page I just don’t want to miss anything in the process of officially becoming part of Mccombs!
@texansfan1 Yeah I saw the bus. foundations program, it seems like it would be just a nice fundamental set of bus. classes. I was actually referring to the Business economics option program (BEOP) which is strictly available for econ majors interested in business and requires GPA minimums to get into. All I know is it’s upper level business classes that also satisfy a business minor but, in a better way than the Bus. foundations program I guess. It seems like a great option for someone who really likes econ but also wants a “marketable” -if you will- set of business skills. https://www.utexas.edu/cola/depts/economics/undergraduate/specialprograms/Business-Economics-Option.php
