Internation student with FIN-AID --MUCH lower chance?

Hi. Im intenational student from Singapore, inteding to apply into us this november ED, probably prefered uni are duke, wusl, northwestern, uva, michigan, austin, nyu, norte dame, brigham young, ucla studying business or marketing.
My seniors said if im international student and applying into these schools with aid. Chanes i get in is extremely SMALL, might otherwise put all hope in need blind school. Can i have some thoughts on this? thank you.

It depends.

Your chances ARE reduced if you need financial aid. You don’t have any LACs on your list. Add some that are generous to international students.

Need-aware schools are not HARDER per se to get in than need-blind schools. Need-blind schools tend to already be selective so either way, yes, you’re facing stiff odds. What are your stats and ECs?

My stats i will compile and post it on another day as i still need to settle some competitions.
ah more question, if i apply into some kinds of “hot course” in the school, for example mcintire school of business(uva), my chance will be lower if i apply to other courses in the school right? thanks

I would like to clarify that applying to a need-aware school will make it SIGNIFICANTLY harder to get in for many schools.

For example:
UCHicago accepted about 262/1863 international applicants last year (Source: https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/admissions/international/</a>)

Now, of the students who applied for international aid, only 100 were accepted over the last FOUR years. That means about 25 students per year. Less than 10% of accepted international students are given aid! Of the 1863, even if only 500 applied for aid (and I would wager that there were probably more), that means only 5% were accepted! That’s lower than any university acceptance rate out there. When you apply for international financial aid, most schools put you into a separate, yet extremely competitive pool. If you really need the financial aid, then you don’t have much of a choice, but honestly you have a better chance of going to Harvard (which is need-blind).

Off the top of my head, international need-blind schools:
LACs - Amherst, Smith, Williams
Harvard
Princeton
Yale
MIT
Georgetown

All of the above schools have acceptance rates below 20%, which means they are ridiculously hard to get into regardless. Note that even top schools like Stanford, Penn (need-blind for Mexicans and Canadians), and the other ivies don’t offer need-blind international aid.

Some of these schools–UCLA, UT and Michigan for example, just don’t give money to internationals. Others like NYU give very, very little. Not a single school on your list is need blind to internationals and none known to be particularly generous. Coming from Singapore, a well represented country with lots who can pay in full, you’ll need to be a rock star to get aid at highly selective schools.

If you have the stats for say Duke, you probably need to apply well below there for significant money.

Flight’s list is wrong though, need blind for intnls does not include Smith, MIT or Georgetown, does include Dartmouth.

1/ Does it make a BIG difference between applying for 20% and 60% aid or they just put u the same as in like in the aid receiving category?
2/if i apply into some kinds of “hot course” in the school, for example mcintire school of business(uva)or mendoza(notre dame), my chance will be lower if i apply to other courses in the SAME school right? thanks
