What about IB students.. does Harvard like IB?

It's regarded as the equivalent of AP.

yeah, but i think AP is a lot more popular than IB.. and IB has stuff like extended essay and theory of knowledge.. and a lot more other stuff ...

I go to an international school where the majority of people in my grade take the full Diploma. My friend (who's British and has never taken an AP course) calls AP "IB's retarded younger brother." I don't want anyone to take offense (I don't really have an opinion either way), I just thought it was funny :)

What makes IB difficult for me is that the courses extend over two years. And the exams can go on for 5 hours, especially for HL courses. So that's a lot of crap to remember.

IB's a b****. Thank God I'm nearly DONE!!

I just thought it was kinda funny that your British friend can comment about AP like that when (s)he's never taken an AP course. Not exactly a good example to cite.

And thought I'd point out that AP exams can be anywhere from 4-6 hours long.

In the eyes of the colleges though, AP and IB are regarded as basically the same because most schools offer only one of the two programs.

Didn't mean to ruffle any feathers, galgrl24. I agree, she doesn't really have a frame of reference because she's never taken an AP course. No harm :)

Anyway, the reason she said that was because of this quote that was posted on our teacher's door "encouraging" us to take the IB:
"Send us prepared students a la IB...it is the best high school prep curriculum an American school can offer." Marilee Jones, Director of Undergraduate Admissions, M.I.T.
Just a person's opinion.

To answer the OP's question, here's a quote from Marily McGraff Lewis, Assistant Dean of Admissions at Harvard:
"IB is well known to us as excellent preparation. Success in an IB program correlates well with success at Harvard. We are always pleased to see the credentials of the IB Diploma Program on the transcript."
So yes, they like it.

As far as I know, most of the AP exams last between 2 and 3 and a half hours.

Do predicted IB grades count as well? No one will have the final IB grades until after the admission decisions are made... unless you take the Nov. exams. So... do they use the predicted grades?

Yeah.. predicted grades are supposed to be an indicator of your performance in the final exams. But they also look at other grades like mid year transcripts, and grades at the end of the first year of the course. A lot depends on what the school decides to send.

with what number of points in the IB are students usually admitted to Harvard? Is 36 (without the EE and TOK) enough?

They don't go by points. They don't know your points, and neither do you since you get your results in July or August, and you're accepted in April. They just go by your grades in the classes. It doesn't matter how many points you get, just get the diploma.

for example.. my predicted is 42.. i have great rank but horrible sat.. will these two compensate ? :D i'm an athlete also :)

how can you "predict" your scores?

your teachers, or your counselor does that...

I'm full IB and have had several AP classes...

AP is easier than IB from what I've seen. There is alot less work, and I've gotten higher scores on my AP tests than my IB tests...

So is there a spot on the applications where is says "predicted" scores in which your GC puts in the prediction?

yeah.. something like that..

If someone gets a predicted 45, is that something they'll go like "yeah, lets take him/her in" LOL ?
