<p>Along with my acceptance letter, I got a letter saying that I was accepted straight into the International Business program. When I went on my campus tour and talked to the admissions counselor in the business department she said that was a 'golden ticket' because that means you don't have to apply for the program during Sophomore year. Does anyone know if that means as a Freshman I can start taking the business courses required for my major? And how many people get straight into the International Business program as Freshman, is it everyone that puts IB as their intended major on the form? </p>
<p>You are considered Pre-IB with direct admit status. As the admissions counselor stated, most students apply to the IB program the spring of their Sophomore year. As a direct admit, you will need to meet the requirements, but you do not have to fill out the competitive application. The requirements for applying during the Spring 2014 semester for the Fall 2014 IB class are the following: 45 College Credits, 3.50 USC GPA, Completion Prior to Fall 2014 of the following 6 Courses (Econ 221 & 222, Acct 225 & 226, MGSC 290 & 291), progression towards the language requirement since IB Majors need at least four 300 Level Language Classes to graduate).</p>
<p>The targeted Fall 2014 IB Class is 120 students. In prior years, approximately 50 were competitive admits. For 2014, they thought that there would be more direct admits and fewer competitive admits. In addition, students in the Cohort Programs (IBCE, IBA) do not count towards the overall class size.</p>
<p>Therefore, during your Freshman and Sophomore years, you will be taking Carolina Core, Business Core and Language classes in preparation of entering IB as a junior.</p>
<p>In order to be a Direct Admit as a Freshman, students need to list IB as their intended major and be one of the following: Carolina or McNair Finalist, Honors College or Capstone Scholar.</p>
<p>Interestingly my son was also a direct admit Freshman into IB but we did not get any indication of being considered for any of the merit “McNair Finalist, Honors College or Capstone Scholar” programs…yet. But then again, we are out of state so perhaps they hold off on such notifications for OOS students until they make those awards (today and tomorrow according to the USC site)</p>
<p>We suspect that he could potentially get the Capstone but he got one of the “strong competition for the honor’s college” letters last month so hopefully atlkaw6’s guidance is on target and if so then that would mean that he would get the capstone. We are still waiting with fingers crossed to learn if he will get any merit award.</p>
<p>We did see the grade requirements for retaining the IB opportunity and I think I posted back in December that the minimum 1st year GPA had been raised to something like 3.65 (from 3.60 in prior years). We know how difficult it can be for a incoming freshman to sustain a good GPA so we plan on staying involved with him to make certain he is doing his best giving him the opportunity to continue into the IB school as planned</p>
