International Chance + Q's

On collegeboard's website it states that Michigan State offers non-need based aid....is this true? I thought U of Michigan didn't offer any kind of international aid, so I assumed that MSU didn't offer anything as well. But does MSU actually offer internationals something? And what exactly is non need based aid? (scholarships? merit aid?)

Financial Aid

International students eligible for non-need-based aid

Number of enrolled international undergraduates received aid: 133

Total amount awarded : $963,817

Non-resident aliens must submit the following financial aid forms:

Foreign Student Financial Aid Application

I'm kind of confused and I has completely ruled out applying to MSU because I figured that if UMich and MSU both didn't offer internationals anything I'd might as well go to UMich because it is rated higher in my program of choice.

But now, I'm considering MSU. Can anyone clarify this? And what kind of stats would be needed to nab a huge scholarship/merit aid (if this 'non need based aid is indeed referring to merit aid, etc.)?

EDIT: Also, on CB's site it states that MSU's EA deadline is October 12th, but I won't have my Oct. SAT scores in time. Will MSU accept my Oct. SAT score and consider it for EA? I don't want to send in my 2090 from May because I doubt that it would be good enough for merit aid (if MSU offers that). Please clarify because I don't have much time to sort this out!

Am I eligible for merit aid? If I get 2200+ how much aid would I get? What if I got 2250+? Please let me know and if MSU accepts Oct. SAT I scores for EA. I doubt my 2090 is good enough for aid. And sorry for double posting; I’m just really anxious/nervous/worried.

First off, please don’t ever assume that a school is or is not going to offer anything because another school does or does not. It doesn’t make any sense.

Secondly, I do not believe that MSU offers any kind of need-based aid. You are right in that it is all academic scholarships.

Third- it is pretty difficult to get aid. Only around 3% of all international students get aid. Additionally, it only covers an average of ~$7k, according to your numbers. This is less than 20% of costs.

Honestly, I don’t know how hard it is to get aid. They don’t release those statistics to the best of my knowledge. But just be realistic and know that even if you one of the lucky few that get aid- it probably won’t cover very much.

With that said, I highly encourage you to apply. You are a great candidate and you never know what might happen. However, MSU is not worth going $100k+ in debt for, ya know? Very few (ie no) schools are worth that. So absolutely apply to MSU, but please have a financial fall-back.

Good luck!! :)

^My situation is really unique, so I might become an instater before yr.1 (but not before I apply). Hence, I will apply as an international, but might be instate before school starts or a month into the school year.

Does that change anything at all?

(and I assumed that MSU gives no merit aid to internationals because UofM and MSU are both state schools and UofM has an enormous endowment, so logically, I falsely concluded that if UofM offered nothing then MSU would offer nothing.)

How might you become an in-stater? It makes a difference.

^long story, but I won’t be instate when I apply. I will apply as an international, appeal later.

Also, will MSU accept October SAT I scores for EA? (Oct. 9th is the test date, Oct. 12th, I believe, is the EA deadline)

I think your residency when you apply really does matter, because on MSU’s website it says you have to have lived in Michigan AT LEAST one year before the semester you start, and it can’t be just for academic reasons. Also, as an international, you have to “reside permanently in the United States” and then prove that you’re a Michigan resident to be considered for in-state tuition. Read all the rules very carefully to see if you’re eligible; but I agree it might not be worth going through all that trouble to come to MSU- is there a specific program that you’re interested in?

^My situation is really complex and I understand what your saying but I’m still sure that I will become an instater.

I’d be a premed at any university I attend and probably a bio or hard science major.

For the international scholarships, I see that MSU looks at the SAT score out of 1600. Is this solely for merit aid/scholarships or do they only use M+CR for admissions as well? (does UMich only use M+CR as well? Please say they use W…lol)

Also, will MSU accept October SAT I scores for EA? I know UMich does not accept Nov. SAT I scores for EA (their deadline is November 1st). Also, does applying EA to MSU and UMich affect me negatively? (will both schools know?)

First, please understand that there is no such thing as EA at MSU. The big deadline is November 1st which is when priority scholarships end. Other than that, it’s rolling admissions. It is NOT EA. Which means missing it by a few days isn’t honestly going to make a huge difference. And honestly, no, they will probably not get your SAT score in time. Those take a while to process.

Secondly, unless your whole family uproots and moves to Michigan, there is virtually no way to be an instater.

^Will they consider October SAT I scores though even if they don’t make the Nov. 1st deadline?

^ As long as they don’t make a decision by the time they get them, yeah, they’ll be considered. Even afterwards, they’ll be considered for scholarships. However, priority is given to those who have everything submitted by Nov 1st. This includes SAT scores.

“hard science major.” Pfft, no science major is “easy”.

I think you have a pretty decent chance to get a scholarship - my one friend who is an international student had a 3.9 GPA (no idea of test scores) and got some scholarships. However, her friend who got a 3.8 GPA with similar test scores didn’t get scholarships. So it is very competitive.

@psilovethomas, by hard science major I meant bio or chem or physics (one of the main streams of science), and hence a ‘hard’ science. I know all science majors are hard but that is not the context I was using ‘hard’ in. Basically, I was saying that I am not going to be a psychology major or a similar major that isn’t one of the main streams of science.

When should I get my entire application in to MSU by to be considered for all the merit scholarships? Is there an EA deadline or anything?

^Kind of. You want them to get everything by Nov 1 for maximum scholarship consideration. In other words get it in ASAP.

Like I said earlier, I do think you have a great shot at some money. Just, as I said before, please please please have a financial fall-back :)!

^Don’t worry, my absolute worst case scenario is ending up at the University of Toronto, so I’m not doing too poorly. :P

But, for scholarship consideration will they use my Oct. SAT I scores? (once they come in).
A person on the UofM board said that they would use the SAT I score that helped me out the most for scholarship consideration. (so, if decide that I am good enough to be accepted with my May score they will send me an admit letter, but for scholarships they will wait for that Oct. SAT I score to see if it would help me out).

Does that process happen at MSU?

They will use the October SAT score, for sure. Whether they use it by Nov 1 is iffy because it depends on when they receive it. None of us can say for sure.

Let me put it this way- I don’t think that the Oct SAT will make or break your scholarship consideration. And if it does do something such as put you in the honors college or give you any automatic scholarships (not sure if there are any outside of the HC…) then your Oct SAT will count for that.

Hope that answers your q. It’s kind of late and I’m tired lol.

PS: I studied abroad through MSU this summer with a girl who goes to U of Toronto. (She is from EL and both of her parents are professors here). She had great things to say about living in Toronto and Canada, but I can’t say that she was a huge fan of the school.

^yea, UofT isn’t my top Canadian choice but I’m sure I’ll get accepted. And thanks for all the info. I’m try to do my UMich and MSU apps at the same time after I finish the SAT I on Oct. 9th and get those apps into the schools by the 25th or near that.

Is the 25th too late? (it is postmarked for the 1st right?..if it gets there by Nov.3rd is that considered late?)

anyone? 10 char

I am not sure. I believe you have to have your online app submitted by Nov 1. Just try to get it done ASAP, that way you won’t have to worry about it.
