I'm lookin for some solid International Development/Aid programs. I understand that some schools' International Relations programs have a International Development/Aid focus, but I'm having trouble determining which ones.

Basically what I'm asking for is if anyone knows of schools with solid International Development programs or International Relations with a Development focus.

The ones I know of so far (though I don't know how strong the programs are) include...
Tulane
McGill
UToronto
UVermont
UCLA
UCBerkley
Vanderbilt

Are you familiar with any others? Thanks!

I live in a developing Asian country and interact quite a bit with NGOs involved in international development. The top people at the NGOs, consulting companies and governmental agencies (like USAID) usually have advanced degrees – Masters, PhDs, LLBs – from influential universities in the field: Georgetown, Tufts, JHU, Harvard, Berkeley are widely represented. Their undergrad degrees come from all over the place.

I don’t think it’s so much the individual program or whether it’s international relations, development economics or some other liberal arts discipline. What’s important is the ability to network, secure internships and overseas experience during your undergraduate years. That can be accomplished at just about any school, so I’d tend to choose more based on academic excellence and the ambience that fits you, rather than the specific program.

Some other undergrad schools that I would look at are Tufts, JHU, Swarthmore, Pomona, Macalester.

I’ve noticed that NGOs and governmental agencies tend to segregate by nationality. If you are Canadian I’d lean toward the Candian schools. If American I would stay in the US.

Lastly, entry level jobs in development economics are notoriously lowpaid – even unpaid, so take care about piling up undergrad debt.

Might look at places like Rhodes that have strong international Studies as well as a strong service focus as well as a strong study abroad program.

I might look into the Marquette International Business program.
