from what i know/heard, the international financial aid pool is very competitive, bascially columbia has a fixed number of international students to whom they give financial aid to (20-30 per year). those kids tend to be stellar, and get close to full ride, because columbia wants to both satisfy their financial need and entice them to come. If you think you're in the top 20-30 int applicants, saddle up your bags and buy an iphone, if you can afford columbia and are not sure of being top 20-30 don't risk it. the policy is likely to improve over time, because a very old international undergrad alumni just donated close to half a billion to financial aid, and columbia (like many peer schools) is trying to be more international and improve financial aid.

Are you sure about what you're saying?

I got in as an international asking for a sh-load of aid and got in under the scholars program too - so all grants, no loans. I don't know if I'm in the top 20-30 international applicants; but who knows? :D

all right i was wrong, but chances do decrease: http://www.studentaffairs.columbia.edu/admissions/faq/aid.php#5

subtle, but the message is clearly present. so vesalvay congratulations.

25-30 CC international students get aid per year, at an average of $34,000, that's significantly higher than the american average which would be like $26 -27,000 or so.

fu gets 15 a year at an average of $26,000:

now these are int admitted kids that enroll, a few more are probably offered admissions and choose to go elsewhere, so it's maybe like the top 50-60 a year that get aid, my mistake, columbia probably accepts like 150-200 or so internationals a year, so chances for financial aid applicants are probably reduced.
