I’m an incoming freshman (international student) and I got direct admission to J-school. Since I applied really late, I got my acceptance email few days ago and put my name on the wait list for the housing.
- I come from the other side of the earth (it literally takes at least 10 hrs or more by flying) so I really need on campus housing.. but the wait list tells me that I'm 7th of all girls waiting for the housing. Do I have a chance on getting into a dorm?
- I am planning on arriving at 15th or 16th of August, so I can attend my ISRO right away.. but I was really interested in Rushing. Since the PHA dates are same as ISRO, that means no rushing for international freshman, right?
- I lived in NY when I was really young, and stayed at Cali for awhile during my highschool years. I have no problem interacting or socializing with others and I got 2160 on SAT etc, but I absolutely know no one in Missouri, and I'm 100% Asian.
I prefer sorority groups other than groups that are focused toward asian americans or asians... and came to wonder if there's any racism or sort in the process of rushing. Does asian (not asian americans) get bids from chapters that consist mostly caucasians?
I’m really looking forward to go to Mizzou this fall, and would be very grateful if anyone can answer my questions! Thanx
I cannot answer your first two questions, but I highly recommend calling the school to ask anything. They were so helpful when we called last year with all sorts of questions that didn’t seem to be answered on their web site. They put me in touch with different departments to answer specific questions and they were very nice.
Regarding sororities, I can tell you that my daughter had similar concerns because she is Jewish and there aren’t any Jewish sororities at Mizzou. What she found was that some houses seem to “stick to their own kind” but most of them were very open and friendly to anyone. She found several houses that she loved and that loved her. The one she picked is pretty diverse and she feels they would never exclude people based on background (other than grades which are very important). She would never join a place that would exclude others or that show any sort of racism.
As far as dorms go, I got an email a few weeks ago saying that they’re having to reconfigure dorm space because their men and women numbers were wrong so they’re trying to make more room for guys. So if you’re 7th on the waiting list and they’re still trying to make space for guys who already have housing contracts and are guaranteed a space, I’m not sure if you’ll be able to get a dorm room or not.
Have no idea about questions #2 or 3, but I can tell you that it’s no big deal to not know anyone in Mizzou; there are going to be plenty of out of state students (like myself) who don’t know anyone, so we’re in the same boat as you. Also, Mizzou tries to be very diverse and accepting of others. During orientation, they talked at great length about how everyone was welcome no matter their ethnicity and differences and how there are plenty of resources to help students adjust. I don’t know if any of the sororities are racist, but there are a few that seem to be multicultural ad diverse.
