International Politics/IS

Hey

While still being a junior i am losing sleep (wild exaggeration, read on…) over if i should choose one or the other (in like a year, god CC makes people paranoid) at a school i like very much…

Ohio States political science department is undisputedly good, and usnews even ranked is 13th in the country and the London School of Economics ranked it a bold 4th in the world. It’s International Politics was ranked 13th aswell.

Their International Studies program interests me as well, with all the concentrations and all, and since i am interested in IR&Diplomacy and Middle Eastern Studies it looks perfect.

My question is ultimately how much does OSU’s Int’l Politics and it’s Poli Sci department in general rub off onto their International Studies major ?
And which would be the smarter choice to major in considering my interests and hopes of getting into a good grad school or landing a good job afterwards.

Thanks in advance!

I would definitely recommend checking this site out:

<a href="http://psweb.sbs.ohio-state.edu/International/pdf/IRD-web.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://psweb.sbs.ohio-state.edu/International/pdf/IRD-web.pdf</a></p>

Our international studies department is VERY interdisciplinary, meaning there are some fundamental classes you HAVE to take in the IS Dept, but most of the classes you get to choose are from a RANGE of different subject areas.

Browsing the pdf above, I see where of the three required courses you have to take, only one is taught by the IS Dept., the others: geography and, alas, political science.

From some of the electives, it looks like you pick from just about any social science field, including economics, history, IS, poli sci, animal science (?), anthropology, comp. studies, german, art history, communications, linguistic, music, and philosophy.

You also mentioned you had an interest in Middle Eastern Studies. The program also requires a student to take two classes above and beyond the normal requirement for undergrad B.A.s. If you're interested in studying the Middle East, perhaps take a foreign language like Arabic or Persian. Or you can always Minor in Middle Eastern Studies:

I hope this helps!

thanks for the post osufunguy! It does btw
