International Prestige?

Not that it makes any impact on my views on the school, but I am curious as to how Dartmouth fares internationally?
I ask because I may want to get a job abroad and would like to know what kind of recognition Dartmouth gets.
Any comments are appreciated.

haha, I am from china and I can assure you that most people here have never heard of dartmouth. when I asked my counselor to sign the ED agreement, he asked me if Dartmouth was a real school…I’d say it is not well-known in Asia, but people here don’t know any american college that is not harvard or yale. However, if you tell people that dartmouth is an ivy league, they’ll be impressed.

I live in China as well, but to my knowledge, Dartmouth is pretty well known. Many people I have met (from students to teachers to professors at local universities) seem to be pretty familiar with the school. At the very least, they know that it’s a good school. I have yet to come across someone who looked completely blank at the mention of Dartmouth.

On another note, Dartmouth is especially well known among our student population because one of our (relatively) famous alumni attended the school. :)

@Claddagh: Could it be that name recognition is different in different parts in China? Where do you live in China?

I live in the northeast. Probably Dartmouth is well known in Shanghai or Hong Kong or other big cities. And students and teachers who are interested in US education know that Dartmouth is a great college, but for people who are concentrating on getting into a good Chinese university and for those who are not in the academic circle Dartmouth is not well known. I think Dartmouth is like University of Edinburgh; it’s a fantastic school and probably offers a better education than Harvard or Oxford, but for some reason people in general don’t know about it.

Just say Dartmouth = Ivy League. Everyone will know
The prestige doesnt really matter that much unless you cannot hold yourself up. At the end of the day, what matters the most is oneself not really about which school you went to… :)

The general population will have never heard of Dartmouth anywhere internationally. However, prominent employers in places like banks and NGOs everywhere will have heard of it and hold it in high esteem, which is all that really matters in the end of the day.

Very few people in the UK will have heard of Dartmouth. That said, like HarvardLegacy mentioned, if you put it in the same sentence as Ivy League then problem solved.

You do know that in Spanish your name translates to big dumb person right? Just thought you might want to change your ID but if you like Big Boba embrace it! Cheers :D
