I know little about post-Dartmouth life and I was curious as to how Dartmouth is viewed by employers, grad schools, the public, etc. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! =)

it's viewed well enough that they won't derisively laugh and throw away your application.

fairly well. it's a decent school, after all.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That said, from what I know, Dartmouth is very highly regarded in the U.S. but may not have the international prestige of HPY. I am told that Dartmouth students are widely considered by prospective employers to be well-rounded, spirited and team players. As far as grad schools, I would imagine that a student's GMATs, MCATS etc. would speak for themselves and be more important than which undergraduate institution one went to.

Those who need to know (recruiters, grad schools, etc), know.

As for the cocktail circuit, Dartmouth may not elicit the same "wow" as Harvard or Yale, but it's still going to impress people.

Unless of course you are talking to an idiot. I had a coworker this summer who had never heard of Brown or Dartmouth.

ilovebagels, that's not the kind of person you need to bother to impress anyway.

Haha, out here in California, quite a few people haven't heard of Dartmouth. My favorite was, after telling a smart, educated person that I was probably going to Dartmouth:

"Dartmouth?! Is that in the United States?"

:D

Dartmouth does really really well "where it matters." Dartmouth does better than an school besides HYPS and maybe MIT when t comes to getting elite jobs after school and its grad placement is in the top 7 at every top professional school in the country. People in places that matter know its strength. As for the average person on the street I'd argue that after HYPSM, the average person's awareness of top schools really falls fast.

Agreed. If you look where it matters, there is a high concentration of Dartmouth grads. Dartmouth is a very prestigious school and this is reflected in many ways, especially through an alumni network that is known for its strength and prevalence.

Numbers-wise, Dartmouth grads are extremely competitive with (and in some cases better than) the "HYPSM" conglomerate that is championed ad nauseum on CC. In particular, if you're concerned about recognition among elites, you will find many threads here that put Dartmouth above some of these schools in terms of i-banking placement. I know we're not all ibankers, but that's generally a good measure of prestige. I wouldn't worry about it.

I beg to differ. I told the dental hygienist that my brother went to MIT, and she responded with "Oh right MIT, Caltech, ITT Tech--one of those tech schools"

Before SuperBad, almost my entire senior class (or at least the ~250 I interact with on a weekly basis) had not heard of Dartmouth.

yeah sf49rox, neither did mine.

i wore a dartmouth shirt to school a couple days after the movie was released and someone came up to me and was like..."that's a sweet shirt...Superbad is such a good movie.. where did you buy you're shirt?"

I said, "At Dartmouth when I visited."

They were in complete shock, "what? that school exists?"

Too funny...

^^hahahahaha. I wonder how many Grey's Anatomy fans think the same way.

Wowww, didger. haha

An addendum... anyone who pronounces Dartmouth phonetically is not worth impressing either.

^^^ Lmao...I totally agree...that's such a pet peeve of mine. I give the "wow you're a moron" look to anyone who does that.

Like, "Dart". . . . . "Mouth" ????

yeah i've heard that many a time from many an ignoramus

how come people never heard of Dartmouth? i had the experience myself. it is ivy league

'Cause not everyone travels in the same circles as we do.

haha I can't imagine not being able to rattle off the eight Ivies....
