International Relations... Jobs?

Don't judge me for my lack of knowledge lol, but what does one specifically study?

And what are the job options? Are they financially stable?

Thanks in advance.

Bump bump bump

im looking into this major too and im really curious if it can actually make you money as a ba or if your better of studying something else and going into IR as a masters. From the research ive done it seems a lot of the jobs are like foreign service officers which makes between like 20,000-40,000 a year and is kind of a your one of a hundred kind of job which doesnt sound great. then again looking at a list of most lucrative majors this hits like top 30 with a mean of 80k ish for mid career which sounds pretty good. basically what im saying is the research just made me more confused so id love to hear from someone who knows whats up.

What colleges have good IR programs?

What can you do with a BA/BS? is more school necessary?

are there other minors/majors to pair it up with that make you more marketable?

Look through the past threads, it’s been discussed in great detail.

The job market isn’t hot for IR majors. Most try to get into government work, which brings standard government salary (look at the GS pay scales).

For every 100 IR major that says, “I want to work for the UN/State Department”, 1-3 actually get hired. You’d be best off joining the Army as an Officer.

Basically, an IR major will provide you with no skill-set.

Also, a master in IR is pretty pointless. All it will do is help you get promoted. If you want it fine, but it won’t help you much. I’d at least wait till you have an employer that will pay for it.

BA in IR = No skill set.

MA in IR = No skill set, but greater student debt and loss of time.

I found this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/other-college-majors/888026-careers-international-studies-majors.html?highlight=international+studies

I know a few people who studied human rights, especially in Africa. Not sure if they have a degree in IR technically (although human rights sounds like an IR field to me). They now work for NGOs in Africa. Not sure at all what the pay is like, then again they live in poor and/or rural areas of Africa where the cost of living is probably very low.
