International relations/Political Science

Hi parents, I started a thread on the Fordham forum about kids from small towns adjusting to NY and then I posted it on the the parents forum (you all tend to be so much wiser). Some suggested that I start a new tread on colleges that offer good oppertunites for my intended majors, international relations/political science. I'm only a junior so I still have some time to make up my mind and could use all the help. Besides Notre Dame and Georgetown what other schools have good international relations/political science oppertunities? Thanks in advance:)

The international relations program at Tufts is renowned.

Lewis & Clark in Portland OR, Goucher in Baltimore and Macalester in MN all have very Internationally focused programs. Goucher requires every student to spend time abroad and gives a stipend to help pay for it. Macalester has a very high %age of International students and even its food service has an International flair.

My D' s school, Rhodes College, seems to have some quite interesting IS programs if someone prefers a smaller school.

And who would ever call Mishawaka a small town, anyway?

Washington, DC is a great location to study IS and/or Poli. Sci., with some priceless opportunities for internships during the school year. American University, George Washington University and Georgetown University all have great degree programs in these areas.

Any good school can prepare you well, but make certain that you go abroad and do a substantive internship in that area. The latter is what makes DC so attractive, but you can also get great internships through other schools.

If you're serious about this, you'll be going to graduate school, so I'd recommend that you spend undergrad going to a great LAC, even if you don't major in Poli Sci. For example, some of the most important work in international relations is being done in agriculture, so don't cut yourself short now by attempting to specialize too soon. Learn a lot about a lot of stuff, and then go to grad school or work on the Hill.

Pomona College in California has a very good IR and polysci program.

And it's warm :).

i second the schools in DC, with American as my non-objective favorite! ;)seriously, you can't beat a place where you can metro in a matter of minutes to some of the greatest international/social/political interships in the country/world!

(internships!)and i think they teach you to spell, too :)

as momonthehill said, several schools around Washington, DC are worth considering if your interest is IR/Poli Sci.

I would add to her list UMaryland-College Park, Johns Hopkins and George Mason - schools with good reputations in those fields in a range of selectivity.

Other schools in the area that might or might not have strength in those fields (others may know): Loyola, James Madison, Washington & Lee, Mary Washington.

They also range from being right in a city (and different areas within it) to more suburban or rural.

Here are the undergraduate rankings for the recent Foreign Policy Magazine article. Take these with a grain of salt though because not all of the schools have a true International Relations program. Plus some of the traditional well-known programs (ex. Hopkins, Tufts) rate a lot lower than expected. Still even if the ranking might not be entirely accurate, it will still give you a good sense of which schools excellent places to study International Relations/Political Science.
