International Relations, Transferring, Parents, and Fraternities

I just completed my freshman year at George Washington.

And I've discovered that I really don't like it, for many reasons and I really regret not even applying to UMD while I was in high school. Hence, I've decided to apply as a transfer student for the Spring 2015 semester at Maryland, much to the disappointment and chagrin of my parents.

The main reason I didn't apply to UMD in high school (and why I'm at GW now) is because GW has a highly ranked International Affairs program- whereas U Maryland's is a subdivision of their Government and Politics program. Does anyone know how well UMD's program is? And how much of a gap there is between GW's program and UMD's?

Also, I'm sure this has been asked before, but literally the only thing I have going for me at GW is my fraternity. If I end up not leaving, it will likely be because of these fine gentlemen. What is the process for entering a new chapter? UMD has a chapter of my fraternity.

Finally, I'm having a bit of trouble with my transfer application essay. UMD is asking me to write about why I want to transfer there, but seems to be academically focused. The problem is, my reasons for leaving GWU and going to Maryland aren't academic. Any advice on how to get around this?

Also, if I'd love some input from current UMD students, especially in the government program. I'm in love with Maryland's campus, and I hate how GW's atmosphere and lack of school spirit makes it feel like I go to grad school.

Thanks!
