Does anyone know what type of internships and jobs are available for someone with an IR major, concentrating in International Economics?

I like that area as well. I am not sure about Internships, but IR with Economics means you should be getting jobs along the UN, especially the World Trade Organisation, World Commerce Organisation etc.

With IR you could also go to finances and work in special economic offices relating to business etc.

I don't know if it's open to all incomers, but worth checking out - in St Andrews, Scotland, there's an internship for IR majors to track terrorist activity as part of an ongoing study.

any more info on that, alice?

Go there, look for the international relations website, and explore. I can't remember where I saw it, but I'm at St Andrews, so I'll find out more as and when .

Hm I checked it out pretty thoroughly and couldn't find it. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong spot. Is it a paid internship? Work visa? Etc? Thanks.

I am majoring in political science which has considerable overlap with IR. I landed a job in the Army Reserve as a military intelligence officer (not enlisted). It is good preparation for that, or anything else related to intelligence.

Hi, I'm a freshman in the business school at my university and am really interested in doing an internship abroad this upcomming summer in France. I am for the most part fluent. Does anyone know of any places I can find an internship, possibly in the retail market? I don't need it to be for credit or anything, I just don't even know where to start looking!

You may be able to get an internship at a think tank. That's what I did, although I'm not in econ.

i don't mean to sound ignorant but what is a think tank? sort of like these discussion forums? if not, where can I find one?

A think tank is sort of a research institute that offers advice and comes up with strategies to deal with problems that are contracted to them by government agencies or other places...lots of policy issues. Big ones include RAND, the Hoover Institute, Brookings Institution, Cato Institute, etc. Most of them tend to lean a specific way politically.

josephine -- can you tell me more about your internship and how you found it? I would really be interested in working for a think tank...also, do their summer internships pay? thanks!

Sorry I didn't see your question before sweetdreams but if you still want to know, I got my internship through a posting on my college career site. I interviewed and was hired. I also went on to work for a different office of the same think tank over the summer. However, I went to undergrad in DC and live in the NY area so there were opportunities near me. I don't know where you live but location is key.
During my internship mostly I was doing research and editing of policy papers, though I was given chances to do some writing. I think it is quite unusual though to allow interns to write a paper. It was a great internship because it was super flexible, I didn't even have to come into the office, I got all my assignments via email. This summer I was a research assistant to the head of the think tank and helped him with his new book.
As for pay...usually these internships either don't pay or pay only a small stipend. People do it because the experience is invaluable and the connections you make may get you a job.
