International Science Olympiads?

I’ve heard of them and they sound interesting.

Could someone please elaborate on what they are?

HELPPPP I WILL FAIL HOW DO I GET GOLD HELPPPP

basically they’re really awesome competitions that are free unless your country is poor and you get to screw around (literally, in some of them, from experience) for two weeks doing whatever math/science you’re olympiad is in for two weeks and also flirt with people from other cultures. they’re pretty awesome except gold is pretty annoying (asdf;lkjasdf;lkj curse of silver in every one I go to omg)

@RinTohsaka I’m going to assume you’re joking for my own sanity…

@Frigidcold wait why would my post affect your sanity? is it the anime character (new episode in series in 15 hours btw), the flirting, or like general trolIiness?

oh btw they usually come with free camps unless your country is poor or the olympiad is poor. more free stuff

@RinTohsaka Such a trolll, I can’t even. -.-

:frowning: why am i trolI?
also, you can just write “trolI” - don’t need the extra “l” to get past the filter

here’s also a list of olympiads:
IMO (math)
IPhO (physics)
IChO (chemistry)
IBO (biology)
IOI (informatics = programming)
and lesser ones:
IOL (linguistics)
IOAA (astronomy)
IAO (older, more soviet astronomy)
IGeO (geography)
IESO (earth science)
IJSO (attempt to merge everything together, then restrict age even further)
IPO (philosophy)

You should probably read the Wikipedia article : https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Science_Olympiad . As you may note, they are ordered in date of creation, which in turn reflects “prestigiosity” or whatever term was coined in these forums (as well as competitively and fame). For example, math, IMO, is the oldest and most well regarded. Note, not all countries participate so you should check how to qualify. In most cases, qualification is difficult, unless you are like @RinTohsaka and winning silver is a piece of cake. In most cases, even making study camp is impossibly hard, and qualification (to semifinals) is a feat to behold. If you study hard, you could probably make it to semifinals. If you kill yourself in studying, you have a slight chance of making it to the international competitions. I would not enter for the sake of entering, but as a means of study and learning, as most of my friends who participate do. It can truly be a rewarding experience, or a monster, depending on how you take it. Lastly, don’t expect too much of yourself, or you may be disappointed as many of the smartest in the world are vying for a few spots. Placing in the international competition, bronze or silver or gold, or even not placing, indicates that you are one of the best high schoolers of that field. Good luck!

@andyis just so people stay sane, i am rather trolly when it comes to claiming credentials. i do not feel as trolly right now so i’ll be less troll and say that even making it to semis (top few hundred) is a huge accomplishment. they are all very competitive and very difficult but also very rewarding - not just in terms of a free camp and a huge boost to college applications (lol), but in terms of appreciating the subject as well.

now, back to being trolly, they’re all trivial so instead of studying you should go watch anime instead. anime is life.
