i heard that science olympiad doesn't look very impressive on apps.
should i leave it off in the academic awards section?

Um, yes it does. Some states are more competitive than others: ie: NY, CA, MI, OH, PA, etc. Medaling at states in any state would be a significant award. Medaling at Nationals would definitely be impressive.

Being as I got 1st in States last year in Astronomy, and 2nd in States this year in Robot Ramble, I'm kind of offended at anyone who says Science Olympiad doesn't look impressive. I worked very hard to get both of those metals.

sorry, i meant regionals

.. It's not going to hurt your application, even if it doesn't help.

yup, I agree. sci-o is also really competitive in my region/state

even if it was something that wasn't very impressive, I'd still include it as long as there isn't a limit.

should i put sci olympiad instead of exploravision?

Is this different from the USABO, USACho, and various other Olympiads of CEE?

Science Olympiad is very different from the CEE Olympiads. It's a collection of small teambased events that occur at regional, state, and national levels.

CEE Olympiad-sssss? The only Olympiad by CEE is the USABO. All the others are run by different organizations.

Go for it... I listed my regional/state medals on my app.

Well, the other Olympiads (intended for selecting international Olympiads) are just as prestigious (if not more) than the CEE USABO.

do i list the specific events or just our overall team place
there doesn't seem to be enough room to list my specific events

Heh, I wasn't implying that the other Olympiads arn't prestigious. I was simply saying that USABO is the only "O" run by CEE. Whether that fact makes it more or less prestigious, I do not know.

I know this was a few (!) years ago, but @bah (if you’re still around checking CC, which I kind of doubt) or anyone else: which states are competitive and which aren’t? You named a few of the big ones up there, but I’m from AZ (generally lagging behind in the education dpt overall). I’ve personally been to SO state twice, but I still can’t tell if it’s worth putting my medals/places on my common app this fall. Any suggestions?
