Hi there,

I'm an international student from the UK and am currently applying to a summer school to MIT (or maybe Yale). The application seems very difficult and I was wondering whether anyone could provide some advice on how to approach the essay questions.

Tell us when you became interested in studying in the US...
Describe what you feel to be your most impressive activity in terms of its impact on you, your peers, family, school or community....
Describe the world you come from...
Write about a time when something didn't go to plan....
Tell us about a time you've had a positive impact on others....

I realise most of these question rely on personal experience, however, is there some standard approach or style of writing that is common for US applications?

Also, I was wondering whether anyone could suggest what extra-curricular activities MIT look for and how I could generally improve my chances of being admitted. I have a year before I have to apply and realise that to get into such a highly competitive university/college, I should start preparing well in advance. I am most worried about extra-curricular activities as most of my accomplishments are largely school related.

Any advice/help would be much appreciated and I would love to hear from a MIT student on what they think of the university and their experiences in applying.

Many thanks,
Dan
