I don’t understand why CCers always bashing NYU, given that money is not an issue to the applicant. NYU is in the business center of the USA, NYC. And there are lots of advantages to attend NYU in addition it is also a great University. There is nothing wrong to attend NYU if it is the dream school of the OP.
No one is “bashing” NYU.
@artloversplus Thanks. I don’t get it either…? Every time i post somewhere there’s someome who tries to convince me that NYU is not ‘all that’ lol. I come from Paris and most people in the USA do not understand that NYU, Columbia, Harvard etc those ‘big names’ are the ones that are known OUTSIDE the US. Nobody even HEARD of Fordham or Hunter. It simply means that if i go back to my country with a degree from a ‘unknown’ school I will not be competitive in MY country. However, if an employer see NYU then the odds of me getting the job are different. Besides that fact, I always wanted to go to NYU because i believe that I fit here as far as the resources offered which coincide with my goals. I’m also active in a NYU fellowship so I developed meaningful relationships with a lot of NYU students, my cousin graduated from here etc.
I am a Normalienne. I understand what “names” are known outside the US, France in particular. I stand by what I wrote earlier about NYU vis a vis Berkeley or UCLA.
@katliamom So if you went to École Normale Supérieure you should get my reasoning for wanting NYU
I did go to rue d’Ulm. And think that, while NYU is OK, for the money you will spend other options – like the ones I listed elsewhere – could be even better. There are reasons to want to go to NYU, but a great respect for the university in France is not one of them.
@katliamom UCLA is not more respected than NYU outside the USA lol.
Have you ever counted up the Nobel prize winners at the UCs vs NUY?
@katliamom as i said it’s really about the name and reputation, and as far as nobel prizes NYU faculty had a LOT of them. Employers do not care much about that factor tho, they care about the NAME of the institution. NYU does hold more weight than UCLA in France, period
OK. You’re the expert.
@burgerdebambi Please, I think international reputation is understood. You have to decide what your plan B is going to be. Multinational employers certain have an understanding of major universities in the US. People are not saying not to try for NYU. They are saying to have an backup plan. NYC is an amazing place to be as a young person and you will have amazing networking possibilities. BTW Prince Albert’s daughter went to Fordham.
I think I’ve also reached the stage at my time on CollegeConfidential where I’m asking, “Where the hell does all of this obsession for NYU come from?”
Look, it’s a good university, but I’ve stopped counting the number of time students have given up other great and more affordable options to instead attend NYU taking out massive loans.
@burgerdebambi May not be your case, if you’re paying full ride then I’m sure they’d be thrilled to have you onboard their…internationally…recognized programs[sic]. But as a fellow transfer student, I’d encourage you to broaden your list a bit. If the Big Apple has you star struck, then check out Barnard and Columbia. If you’re O.K. with being a little bit further away from the city, think Vassar, Colgate, Hamilton.
edit: If you’re applying for the Fall 2018 term, then the deadlines for some of the colleges I mentioned above have passed
@AGoodFloridian Yes i’m applying as a transfer so the colleges you mentioned can not be applied to at the moment. As I said I wouldn’t have to take loans so I am not worried about it. I did not like the elitist vibe at Columbia tho
@gearmom the plan B would be to go to Fordham or Baruch then apply to NYU for grad school. I am not saying Fordham is bad it is just not as good as NYU.
@burgerdebambi I agree NYU would be a better choice but your Plan B is sound. You’d be with lots of wealthy and well connected students at a place like Fordham and NYC an awesome place to be at your stage of life. Probably the least expensive it will be to live there.
@burgerdebambi Also consider that NYU is scattered and a place like Fordham has an actual campus. It’s easier to be part of it and connect with people with a dedicated campus https://www.fordham.edu/info/20394/campuses Either option will be great but you will sacrifice the “college experience” to go to NYU.
@gearmom I see your point but i am from Paris so I do not necessarily want a campus experience which is why I am also attracted to NYU. I like the fact that the city is its campus so it is not a con for me
@burgerdebambi Part of the college experience will be networking. My non-scientific POV is that wealthy Americans tend to favor Fordham and wealthy internationals tend to favor NYU. The Fordham Rose Hill campus in the Bronx has more creature comforts which appeals to well heeled Americans. it won’t be a bad thing if you have a more integrated experience with the Fordham kids. You have great Plan A and great Plan B. Let us know how it works out for you. Good luck!!!
@gearmom Thanks for the advice I will let you know if i get in
