International Student Help

Hello,

I'm currently in my Junior Year (start Senior in 2.5 weeks) and live in Australia.
Going to South Carolina would be my dream, I was on exchange to the USA last year and during this time I visited many colleges, realizing that it would be perfect for me after I finish school.

I know that USC doesn't offer Need-Based Financial Aid for International Students, but is there any other way to qualify for aid? Does USC offer scholarships to International Students or can I still qualify for normal scholarships?

Cheers.

I think you need to talk to admissions counselor. Also look at International student services (ISS) page - the way I read the funding portion, you could be eligible for some departmental scholarships but “normal” academic non-resident merit aid appears to be for out of state students (US residents). Most need based aid even for US citizens is in the form or loans or work study so I don’t expect you’ll have any luck there. Look at ISS page and all international admissions info, but I would call and get a more official answer than you will find here. Good luck!

Hello! Where in Australia are you from?

I’m actually living with an Australian this semester. (I’m studying abroad in France though.)

Anyways, check out this page: [Funding Your University Education - USC | International Student Services](<a href=“International Student and Scholar Support - International Student and Scholar Support | University of South Carolina”>International Student and Scholar Support - International Student and Scholar Support | University of South Carolina) And as scmom12 said, call (or email, since it might be expensive) admissions and see what you can find out.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for the help,

I’m from Canberra (the capital) and will probably do the SAT’s at the start of next year…
With departmental scholarships, how do you apply for them? In Aus you get accepted into university based on what course/degree you apply for (depending on your score), is the USA the same or is it a matter of getting accepted into Uni and then you can choose any course you want?

Nice. My roommate is from Perth, but I’ve met a lot of Aussies from that part while I’ve been here. I literally ran into a group of like 10-15 Aussies yesterday. haha

And it depends on the university! Sometimes, within universities it even depends on the actual course you’re looking at.

USC admits students regardless of what major they declare (or don’t declare). Be aware that if you want to study programs such as Nursing or International Business, then you’ll most likely have to reapply during your sophomore year for the major itself.

If you’re not sure what you want to study yet, you can still apply to most universities in the US undeclared. In fact, there are some universities (such as Wake Forest) that don’t even allow freshmen to declare majors.

Each department has its own requirements for applying. Look on the different Department’s websites online and you should be able to find information. Some departments have very little to offer, while others have a lot. Some have major and/or minor restrictions, while others are open to anyone who takes courses in that area.

Also. Do you play an instrument? If so, marching band might be a good option. They give scholarships to all participants and reduced tuition to out-of-state students, so I’d assume as an international student you’d probably qualify as well. There’s no audition, and it’s a great way to really get involved with Carolina life. http://www.carolinaband.org/pdf/2013-2014_Rec_Event-Frequently_Asked_Questions.pdf

Oh that’s awesome, heeps of Aussies travel Europe around this time of year which explains why!

I’d definitely be interested in studying either Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Accounting or Business Management. Do departments offer these scholarship before you attend the school? I would definitely need guaranteed financial assistance before I fly over.

Unfortunately I gave up my instruments during my early teenage years, so I don’t think I could get anywhere through that passage :p

Well, the school I’m studying abroad has a huge international program, so we all go to the same university, so I see them on a pretty regular basis. lol

But I don’t think any of those have specific entrance requirements. =) And you would know your financial aid information in the spring before you have to put in a deposit, but you won’t know tuition information until July. (It only ever goes up about 3% a year though, so you can guestimate.)

But yeah. So just look around the different Department websites and see what you can come up with. I’m not familiar with any of those, but if you search around you might find something promising. :)

IM AUSTRALIAN ! Wooo :)

Hahah g’day sammyy do you go to uni in the states?

Planning to  I’m applying this year

Oh yeah where to?
