International student + Ivy League + SAT + chance..

Hi everyone..
I would like to enquire something that has been bothering me for weeks..

I'm an international student plan to major in engineering. My ethnicity is Chinese (though not coming from Singapore or China). I have apply to Cornell ED, and want to apply to UC Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, and Columbia.

First of all is the SAT score. My score is 1410/1600, 2020/2400 (I sit for only 1 time)
Score breakdown is as followed (CR-630, M-780, W-610)
My question is, will this score be competitive enough for the 4 schools above?
I know that all these school have no cut off point for the SAT score, but of course the higher the score, the better my chance is.
So, I'm curious whether this 2020 score is deemed competitive or not..

I wouldn't mention my SAT 2 score since I haven't receive the result.
I took Physics, Math IIC, and US History (expect >700 for Math IIC, >650 for Physics and US History)
Because of this, I will retake in December.

Rank: 1/350
GPA: 3.94 UW

Second is ECs.
I would say that my ECs are considered as solid:
Leadership position:
-President of PROSTAR (a club aimed to raise awareness about AIDS among teenagers-the club patron is my country's Ministry of Health)
-Treasurer of the same club
-Assistant editor of Chinese Cultural Society

Sports:
I am not a sport type.
But..
-Non varsity badminton
-Undergo swimming lesson
-A member of my school's marching team (We represent the school to district level competition)

Community service:
Occasionally
-Participate in charity run
-Visit home for the disabled

Awards:
-Recepient of Singapore Economic Development Board National Precision Enineering scholarship 2008 - study in Nanyang Polytechnic, considered as top in engineering in Southesat Asia Region (I reject this scholarship for some reason)
-Recepient of Petronas scholarship (Petronas is a multinational oil company)
-Certificate of Credit in Australian Mathematics Competition
-(Dunno this is significant or not) I was the best student in my class

Assume that my essay, teacher recommendations, and counselor report are solid..
What is my chance for the 4 schools?

I know there are so many chance thread there, but I am curious about my chance and will appreciate on any comment..
Thanks!!

umm I think you have a good chance for carnegie mellon and a solid chance for berkeley. I don't really know about Cornell and Columbia..I think you have a chance but definitely not a sure one..

It's spelled "inquire."

Enjoy getting rejected everywhere.

Ironmetal, it's spelled both ways.
Just for the record.

HAHAHAAHHAAH, this was priceless. :')

reject for columbia. that's for sure.
are u applying for finaid?

to ironmetal: whats wrong with the word "enquire"?

No, i am not applying for financial aid.

Any other comments?

I know that my SAT 2 score will be mediocre, so I am retaking it in December to get >750on all three subjects..

I can say that you have a decent chance for Berkeley, but can't say much about others

I thought polytechnic students can only apply as transfer student?

I don't think the OP went to the Polytechnic (he/she rejected the scholarship).

OP: not sure if you got my PM or not, but basically, you have the same ECs and stats like many other Malaysians applying to the US. With hundreds of us under Petronas and JPA plus those in the other pre-u institutions, you need something to stand out from the rest of the crowd. Not to brag or be a wet blanket, but many of my friends have way better SATs and ECs. I'm assuming that you do know how few Malaysians manage to get into, say, Cornell and Columbia each year.

I'd say that you need have great essays and recs in this case. But good luck, I do hope that you get in where you want. I really do.

clep: is it true malaysians will be in the same pool with other seasians?

Raise your SAT subject test levels up to as close to 800 as possible and SAT critical reasoning up to 2250+, especially on math level 2 (many people receive 800, check the stats), do more community service to make up for the EC, and to answer your question, certificate of credit in the Australian Mathematics Competition is REALLY NOT AN ACHIEVEMENT- DO NOT PUT THAT ON YOUR RESUME (I would know as I received a prize in the same competition last year)

This post is literally 6 years old :stuck_out_tongue:
Some standards have changed.
