Does anyone know when international students have to go for orientation? Is there a specific date required? Thanks!

contact admissions or the international students advisor

It looks like it will run from Aug 27-Aug 30 based on this link http://www.princeton.edu/intlctr/news/archive/?id=12017

International students are not required to attend but it’s incredibly helpful and probably your best opportunity to meet some incredible people from all over the world. If you attend, you’ll also need to choose one of Community Action or Outdoor Action. Both are a lot of fun and will allow you to meet even more people.

Thank you su much!! I will definitely try to go! Another quick question, are the Community Action/Outdoor Action part of the International Orientation or a later event?

They are separate events that follow for one week immediately after International Orientation finishes. If you register in IO you are required to register for CA or OA. Here is some information for last years’ CA/OA events:

<a href=“Frosh Trip | Outdoor Action”>http://www.princeton.edu/~oa/ft/index.shtml

Based on trends in past years, most likely CA/OA will run from Aug 30-Sept 6 this fall. CA is focused on community service projects (my son chose this in his freshman year and loved it) while OA is what it sounds like - outdoor activities (kayaking, hiking, canoeing etc). Each of CA/OA has a variety of events to sign up for, all on a first come, first served basis. They do hold a few spots for IO students who must do one or the other if they come to IO (they don’t want you just sitting around on campus for a week!) but if you sign up early you’ll get a better chance to get the activity you want.

The best part is that through IO/CA/OA you’ll get to meet a large number of people which really helps ease the transition into Princeton life.

Thanks so much! I’m sorry to keep bugging you but I have a few last questions!! So if i participate in the International Orientation I would already move into my dorm right?! Also, until when should the parents stay? I know there is a special event for parents on August 31 (for the CA/OA students), but I don’t know if there are any later events for them of if they should just leave?? Thanks again!!!

You are not bugging anyone - that’s what this forum is for! =) Yes if you participate in IO you will move into your dorm prior to the start of IO. You should be aware that they are big on equity in rooming so you cannot “claim” your space before your room mate is present. My son was given his room mate’s contact information and was able to e-mail and call him to work out who would take what space prior to moving in. Otherwise they will insist that you keep things “neutral” until your room mate arrives.

One thing your parents might enjoy is the pre-rade which is the welcoming event for the freshmen class where you enter by residential college through the FitzRandolph gates. It will be held on Sept 7 this year I believe. Here’s a link http://www.princeton.edu/princetoniana/traditions/current/pre-rade/ While only freshmen can participate, lots of parents stick around to watch. The opening exercises (held in the chapel) are televised elsewhere on campus but can also be streamed later for those who cannot attend. I think there are also activities for parents the day before which is the official “move in” day for all students who are not part of IO/CA/OA or fall athletes who are on campus early.

Since our son was there so early we didn’t actually attend any of these events but we did watch it online. It’s a long stretch between the beginning of IO and opening exercises so if your parents feel it is too long to stick around they will definitely not be the only ones in that boat!!
