I know it seems early (or late!) to be talking about graduation, but I was wondering if international students wearing a sash of their country's colors is a common place at graduation. I am the only international at my school and I graduate in a year. It seems to be standard at other colleges in my locality that internationals wear the sash and have a ceremony.

What is your opinion of this?

My first thought was, “What is a sash?”

Since you are the only international student at your college, there’s no tradition to follow. You can do whatever you want! No one will notice if you don’t wear one, but you might have to answer a few questions if you choose to stand out from the crowd.

At my own college international students wear the same as everyone else, but I am not sure how typical that is. We also don’t have special distinctions for honors students, which seems rather uncommon.

By the way, I am glad to hear that you found a way to finish your degree!

Thanks b@r!um! Yeah, it was touch and go for a while. It seems that it is mostly international students at public universities that wear them. Some of these colleges even provide them for students who have studied abroad. We give our honors students yellow cords as they cross the stage. I think I’m just curious about sashes especially as students who go Greek now wear cords or sashes, too.

This is the best way to explain a sash, I guess!
