International Student seeking help

the Ivies accept 10% or so of those who apply.

I think it’s much lower for int’ls.

Also…Most of the ivies are not really known for engineering. Cornell is good…and maybe Columbia. The rest, not so much.

Your list should probably include…

MIT
Cornell
Stanford
Columbia
and the rest should be schools that will give big merit. There are some that give large scholarships to int’ls.

*My dad got his masters degree and doctorate from America *

Can you clarify? It doesn’t sound like you’re low income for Turkey.

Your income and assets will be looked at from the perspective of your country…not the US. Your family may be expected to pay for more than you think.

*They’ll be able to show the money. *

It really sounds like your family is more affluent than what you think. Again, it doesn’t matter if your family’s income would be “low” for the US. It’s not low for Turkey. Schools will likely determine that your family will need to pay a good share.

Maybe. This poster will be asked to file his financial aid applications (whatever the school asks for) and convert his income to U.S. dollars. If the school meets full need, it will be based on their computation of his need based on the family finances in U.S. dollars…not his relative wealth in his native country.

I agree with thumper1, I don’t think that’s the case; it would be really illogical for the school to want money according to Turkey but I’m not certain. My family makes around 2,500 dollars a month more then 6 times the minimum wage in Turkey so we’re well off here but it would be quite hard to pay 30 thousand dollars a year. But we have money saved up so I’ll be able to show the money but it would be really difficult for me to pay it.
MIT Caltech Stanford Cornell are all really good schools on par with Ivys I’m looking for schools a little lower on the ladder.

FYI to everyone else…you’re compared to the cost of attendance, NOT to what the average family in your country makes. In my country, I’m middle class. In the US, I’m prooobably low class (especially depending on the area). I got need-based financial aid WITHOUT lying anywhere on any form.

It’s not that international students are “faking” things on their college fin. aid apps…most of the time, honestly, the families with nicer houses in our countries could not even THINK of getting a similar house in the States.
