International Student Transfer Fall 2017

Hey guys! I’m an international student from the Dominican Republic who would like to transfer to an American university. I took both the TOEFL and the SAT in 2015, I got good scores. (except in Math because I suck and didn’t know much about English math). (I’m a psychology major btw). I’m finishing my Freshman year in DR.

College GPA: 4.0
HS GPA: 3.7 (In DR, we don’t take AP or IB classes)

Languages: 4 (Spanish, English, German, and French)

Sports: Taekwondo

Community service: teacher in a highly impoverished neighborhood. volunteer in a Psychiatric hospital for research purposes.

I’m a blogger and a psychological private practice assistant. During HS, I was the VP of the student council, Drama Club director, and leader of my school’s catholic youth ministry.

I’m applying to Amherst College, Yale, and GWU.

Do you think I’ve got a shot? I’ll be sharing my essay later on.

SAT (1620) (Critical Reading: 630/ Writing: 570/ Math: 420)

As I’m sure you can imagine, Yale’s transfer acceptance rate is low: 1.68% last year. Amherst (College, not UMass-Amherst) is just under 6%. GWU is just over 50%. Your SAT scores are in the middle (CR), bottom 25% (Writing) and bottom 2% (Math) of admitted students for GWU. For Amherst they are in the bottom 25% (CR), bottom 3% (W) and zero (Math). For Yale they are in the bottom 17% (CR) and bottom 3% (W) (no available stats for Math).

Obviously, the decisions are not based on stats alone, and a 4.0 college GPA is super, and (most importantly) there may be parts of your app that aren’t noted above that an adcomm loves. But: if you really want to go to the US I would widen your net. Also, you don’t mention finances- if they are a factor look at that part carefully. Finally, you might find Transferweb helpful.
