International students - mingling or separatism ?

I am planning on studying in a US college in the future .
When I'll be older . Anyway I was wondering how is the interactions between American college students and the international students .
is it a welcoming treatment ? Do internationals and locals inter mingle ?

Speaking from personal experience, all international students I have seen do not mingle with American students. They tend to stay in groups with other international students. I’m sure that if you made the effort, mingling with American students wouldn’t be difficult since there are so many people with different backgrounds in college.

My cousin is a international student studying in America and she’s easily made friends with both international students and american

In my experience, students are generally welcoming of international students (especially if they have cool accents =D), and I met some great people who were international students when I was in school. They generally aren’t treated very different, as far as I remember, from any other student that I met in college. You might want to look into housing options for international students at the schools you’re looking at. My school had international housing that had a mix of American and international students, and I know some really great friendships that developed from living there. Looking for a school with that sort of arrangement might help you mix with American students more (assuming you want to, of course).

I think it depends on the campus. My campus has a ton of intl students from Asia but they tend to hang out with their group (ie; Koreans with Korean-Americans and Korean intl students all group together). I suspect this is mostly due to language barrier as I never hear them speak English unless necessary, like in class. So oh my campus we have a huge separation but I think it’s mostly in part because intl students don’t immerse themselves.

Before I transferred here, I went to another school and intl students fit right in with American students and embraced them.
