Hey everyone, I’m an international students willing to go to an American university. Like almost 50% of international students I cannot afford tuition at any us colleges or universities. So I want to know what is the best financial Aid for me: merit based, need based, or need blind. If possible, I need a clear explanation on the difference between those kinds of scholarships.
I also want to know which universities provide good financial aid for international students.
Is there anyone who went through this process? please help me.
Are there any loans for international students?
Is it true that scholarships for international students are given by Ivy League universities? If not, what are the other universities that provide scholarships for international students?
Thank you in advance
Merit-based aid = Money for students who have very good grades and test scores.
Need-based aid = Money for students whose families can’t pay the full cost.
Need-blind admissions = How much scholarship money you would need in order to attend doesn’t matter for admissions. You can be admitted to a college or university even if you can’t pay for it and they aren’t going to give you any scholarship.
Meets full need = If you are admitted you will get the scholarship that the college or university thinks is enough money for you to be able to attend.
International students cannot borrow loans in the US unless they have a fully-qualified US person to co-sign the loans. If you need a loan, you must find it in your own country.
Many colleges and universities offer some scholarship money to international students. Some offer only one scholarship each year. Some of the college-matching search engines include this information. Start with https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/college-search click on “Paying” then check the box for financial aid for international students.
You also can get help at the office of EducationUSA that is closest to where you live. https://educationusa.state.gov/find-advising-center
No way for us to tell you what types of aid are best for you. What is your SAT or ACT score. What is your GPA? Can your parents contribute anything towards your schooling?
Do,you have college options at a lower cost in your native country?

Most int’l students pay all or nearly all of the tuition costs. Half of int’ls aren’t getting substantial or any aid.
Contrary to popular belief there are no tuition/room/board/airplane ticket/shampoo fairies in the US waiting to bestow generous financial aid packages on international students willing to go to an American university.

Being “willing to go” isn’t enough. There seems to be a misunderstanding amongst many int’ls. Too many seem to think that US univs have buckets of money to fund their educations and expenses. US univs don’t even have enough money to do that for DOMESTIC students, much less int’ls.
Only a tiny number of low/modest income int’ls get into the FEW schools that give lots of aid (the HYPS type of schools). 99% of schools don’t have that aid to give, so the huge majority of int’ls “willing to go” to school here have parents who are “willing to pay” for that privilege.
If you “win the lottery” and happen to get into a HYPS-like school, then super. If not, then colleges in your own country will be your best option.
Thank you all.
Mrs.mom2collegekids, with all do respect I’m not just willing to go, I’m trying really hard because I know that willing is not enough (every student all around the world is willing); I know that I’m competing with millions of intelligent students from all around the world. My principal goal is to get better education in the USA and if possible change my families life. I would like to thank you for your explanation.
Thank you
@totish: Can you answer @thumper1 's questions?
- What is your SAT or ACT score?
- What is your GPA?
- Can your parents contribute anything towards your schooling?
- Do you have college options at a lower cost in your native country?
I can’t answer all of this question right now because right now I’m in 10 grade and I didn’t take the sat yet.
For my GPA I really don’t know I’m in a French system school and it’s a little difficult to convert my scores to GPAbut last time I checked I think it was about 3.7.
I can’t say my parents won’t contribute anything but what I know is that they can contribute a very small amount of money compared to that of the tuitions.
And for the last question, I have some colleges with a lower cost (10% lower) but it is still to expensive.
Alright. Ask again after you can answer the questions. Work on your English. Do the very best you can in school.
Thank you very much @Madison85
