International Students?

I'm currently a year 12 student from Australia and am considering applying to US universities for either 2010 (first year/what you guys would call freshman year) or maybe for 2011 in my second year. Can anyone tell me - assuming my SATs and other application requirements are good enough - what my chances are for getting into the Ivies or perhaps some of the better colleges in California? I'm not sure which unis (colleges) have good reputations over there, aside from the Ivies, so I just want a general overview of which universities will or will not disadvantage my application because I'm an Australian student. I have an American passport, if that helps, but as of now, I'm not sure which one I'll be using. Point is, how easy or how difficult would it be to get in?

Thanks in advance.

They'll be no disadvantage if you are an American citizen. If you are not, which I understand you aren't, top schools will be difficult for you because you will be competing against the top Asian kids who are applying as international students.

The acceptance rate for this year at Harvard will be somewhere around 5% I believe, and that is for citizens. International admissions is crazy, particularly at need-blind schools like many of the Ivies. Aside from the Ivies and other need-blind schools, you will have a noticeable boost if you don't need FA (Financial Aid).

I hate to tell you, but most US schools have already stopped accepting applications... and I seriously doubt they allow international transfers.
Good luck!

I'm an international student myself, and as I know from asking the colleges, private schools DO NOT disadvantage international students, unless you are applying for financial aid. Did you say you have an American passport? If you do, you're not considered an international student anymore!

hey im an aussie too!

I want to get into MIT, berkeley, stanford or cornell for engineering in 2011.

So apparantly its really hard for international students to get in... but how do the Asian kids get a high SAT score? e.g. Chinese kid doing SAT.. don't they have to do the paper in ENGLISH? wouldnt their lack of english disadvantage them a little bit? not being racist/judgemental or anything but i assume their english isnt top notch and yet they still get high scores? dont mean to offend anyone btw.

^ They do study really hard. Do note that Chinese kids aiming for the Ivies and Oxbridge comprise of the top 0.5% (?) of the entire country's graduating class (of approximately 9 million+ individuals) - so it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that they are good in English.

Oh, yeah, you're right. I should probably rephrase: I'm a dual American citizen born and raised in Australia and am currently studying there. Yeah, that doesn't make me an international student. That's good to hear that I won't be disadvantaged even though I don't go to school there.

aigiqinf: In Australia, we apply to universities in June each year for the following year. So I won't be applying to the US for the academic year 2009 - 2010. How early do you have to apply beforehand to study in the year 2010 - 2011? Also, when do the offers/rejections come out during the year?

There is a whole forum for International students that you can reach by clicking on "Discussion Home" in the upper left of this screen, and then scrolling down. If I recall correctly there is an "Aussie" thread too.

Wishing you all the best.

Thank you so much for everyone's help. I really appreciate it!

Best wishes to all.

you won't have to apply until dec 31 or jan 1 2009 the LATEST.
some schools like UCs have deadlines in november.
