Hi, so I recently bought an international version of "Principles of General Chemistry" 2nd edition by Silberberg for CHEM 6A for really cheap on ebay. I did a little research and read that international versions of textbooks are identical in content other than the price. However, the cover of my book says "This INTERNATIONAL STUDENT EDITION is not to be sold or purchased in North Amerixca and contains content that is different from its North American version." Does anyone have experience from previous years with this book? I'm almost certain that the purpose of this tag is just to scare potential US buyers away, but I just need a little reassurance. Thanks in advance =)

this is the FIRST TIME the silberberg textbook will have been used at ucsd.

when the bookstore says “ucsd custom edition,” that might be your hint that it’s not going to be sold anywhere else.

sorry, no reassurance this time.

Yeah I asked the workers at the bookstore and they told me that the new chem book is only “custom” because they split the textbook into three smaller books for chem6a, 6b, and 6c respectively, so the aspect of “custom” isn’t really a problem for me. I just wanted to know if the international version of textbooks are generally the same as the US editions. Thanks for your input though!

yeah basically the custom thing means nothing.
my chem prof. said that it just means they put the chapters in the order the course will be going in (which is basically that they just took out ch5).

but the international ver shouldnt be too different…

i think it is the same, a way to scare people off. I have the international edition of principles of modern chemistry for oxtoby and i compared it with my friend’s, even though it says content is different, page by page word by word is the same thing.

it’s not always that way - my intl copy of the chem 120a textbook was completely off.

My international version textbooks for cse 20,21, and 140 were the exact same as the US version. The only difference was that the international cover had a border surrounding the cover face.

If you’re taking the physics 2 series, the “ucsd custom edition” is completely unnecessary. They literally took the original physics book and split it into three “volumes” for $70 each. I bought the original textbook on half.com for about $10.
