founded the literary society:
am current president. there hasn't been such a society in our dept for 20 years.
aimed at spreading liberal arts education and promoting a strongly academic environment in my university
we have done four presentations over the year: 'artists of the renaissance', 'relativity', 'evolution', and the 'bird flu'. we have also arranged several programs for the chairperson of the department
we are also getting published the 'MICROBIA' magazine that is supposed to get published at the end of this year. all he work done in the magazine has been done by us. there are also several research works by us as well.

i have been working to organize an arts exhibition this year. my artwork is of the comic-book/fantasy genre, and the exhibition will be the first of its kind in pakistan. i have been working by teaching O-levels tudents for a year to make up the money for it. it's been REALLY HECTIC! i have done each and everything for the exhibition myself. it is probably the most important thing i might've done in my life.

i am currently seeking approval of my professor to allow me to do some experiments on this research i want to do. this should be done with soon. i might've missed out other stuff too. but this is basically most of it.
i need you guys to tell me how bad a chance i have at this. and plus how do i show them stuff that i've done on an unofficial basis like helping my dad out with writing his official letters at the bank.
thanks a lot u guys. anything is appreciable.
oh and i can speak urdu, english, and french. i've done a certificatecourse in the latter.

I cud have helped you but I guess its too late now…

onemorechance, supposing someone with similar stats (maybe better) raised the question now, would you still be able to help? :)

My suggestion would be to apply to some smaller liberal arts schools with good Biology programs. As a transfer, your reasons for transfer essay and college grades will matter the most, so focus on those! If you’re apply in 2015 season and need help, let me know. I transferred to the US too after my sophomore year.

idolseacrest, where did you transfer from? Where did you transfer to? Are you paying for it yourself? Do you still graduate in the same amount of time as before? Did you have to fulfill gen ed requirements?

I’ll be enrolling at a chemical engineering program this september (inshAllah) but I’d hoped for a liberal arts education all along. If things don’t work out fine for me here; and I’m going to try hard to make thme work; then I too will try to transfer. So any help you can give me will be much appreciated.

I transferred from BNU to Bennington College. I have an annual scholarship of $45,500. I’m graduating in the same year and there was just a tiny bit of deficit credits that can easily be covered with a couple of extra courses. The great thing about Bennington was that there aren’t any restrictions or requirements, so I could take courses across the board.

I’d suggest take as diverse courses as possible, I know it sounds impossible but take a social sciences course here and there because Islamiat and Pakistan Studies DO NOT transfer. Keep your grades up! I had 3.98 CGPA when I transferred. Especially in lesser known schools like BNU, where the general misconception is that it’s a party school, there was a LOT of work. I was putting in extra hours almost every other day. Like they say, andhon mein kaana raja. lol
And be very careful when you pick the colleges you apply to. Most well known ones are likely not to accept but small liberal arts colleges with unorthodox teaching methodologies do tend to be more accepting of foreign education systems and their students.

If you need anything else, just let me know.

I agree with Idolseacrest esp about the size of a college and their acceptance of foreign curriculums.

I have been considering a list of colleges…only two are VERY well-known but the others are smaller, lesser-known liberal arts colleges. All of them follow an open curriculum, which is why I’ve considered them, since there won’t be any gen ed requirements. I’m going to try to get a social sciences course, but I’m not sure if I’ll be allowed to at NUST. Thank you for your help. I was beginning to worry it might not be possible because not many international transfers get aid.

No problem. And don’t let anyone tell you that it’s IMPOSSIBLE. Because you’re self-belief automatically translates into your essay and interviews. As a transfer, you’re supposed to have a clear vision of how you’ll be at an advantage at the university you’re applying to; you don’t necessarily need to plan out every single detail but you need to know where you want to go from where you are now and what your meaning of success is. Maturity in thought is key here.

And for SS courses, you can talk to your coordinator or whoever is in charge of assigning courses in your department and ask if they’ll let you take a course from another department. My folks at BNU let me drop a random course at my department for a really nice Mythology course at another. Too bad NIPCONS isn’t opening classes till 2011 because a course from there would be nice.

Right. I was also wondering, were there any hooks attached to your apps? Like, do you have american citizenship? Also what did you apply for, spring transfer or fall? Where else did you apply, besides bennington?

Nope, I’m a Pakistani citizen and I applied for Fall. I applied to Sarah Lawrence, Dickinson, Drexel, Hamilton, and a couple of others that are completely slipping my mind right now.

I don’t have any more questions at the moment, but is it okay if I PM you later when I begin my applications? In the meanwhile, these are the colleges I’ve been considering:

Amherst
Colgate
Beloit
Mt. Holyoke

I’ve also added bennington to the list.

Also, were you accepted to any of the others?

dude your chances are impossible at harvard and yale, not because of your stats(which, btw, are very good, why didn’t you apply as a freshman?) but because harvard and yale donot take transfers, yale takes some, but a very low number. But all the rest of them you can probably get in easily. dont get too complacent though, when I say easily I mean that write a stellar essay and knock em out!=) put in a lot of effort in your essay and explain to them that how your life in Pakistan has affected you and what ‘something special’ you can bring to their community etc etc…best of luck

Um, onemorechance, would you be referring to my stats or to Arseus?
