Does being an international help or hurt in admissions, assuming the college is need-blind?

It hurts...
The international pool is said to be the most competitive sub-group of all applicants at most (selective) colleges.

Still Hurts. Some colleges have certain number of spots for International (like MIT)

I guess all colleges limit the number of internationals.

Check each college website to see what they say about international admissions. The openness varies. That being said, it can help being from an area that is not well represented in the school population.

I hear Carnegie Mellon's pretty generous with Internationals.

Generous maybe - but not "easy" to get into.

Also, if you can't afford a private college education on your own, Carnegie Mellon's a bad idea -- no financial aid whatsoever for international students.

The only need blind place where being Int'l doesn't hurt is Harvard, because it doesn't limit the number of Int'ls.
