I'm a sophomore looking into research and development internships at pharmaceutical companies but since I switched into my major quite late, I don't really have much coursework on molecular biology beyond introductory biology courses (the only upper bio classes I've taken are in physiology and evolution) and I lack coursework in chemistry, although I have four years of experience with related lab work in microbiological organisms. How much is this going to affect me in finding internships?

I just received an offer to work at AbbVie - a new pharmaceutical company in North Chicago. I did not think I had a lot of impressive accolades with respect to the pharma industry - I have research experience and leadership experience on student project teams.

This offer is for an engineering position as an sophomore there. Your lagging in coursework will affect it your chance, but not as much as you think. They look for experience in lab or previous internships. Do you have those? If you do, the better chance they will offer you. Additionally, you probably won’t get your first pick in internship projects so don’t have super high expectations for a first timer.
