Internship during gap year

Hello guys!

I am thinking about having a gap year after I finish my high school (what is this year), and so I've been searching around for some internships I could do abroad in some tech companies. What I would like were 3 months in either a good and creative start-up or in a big company. The areas I seek to improve with this internship are technology, business and design. I thought about Facebook, Google, IBM, Frog design, Quora, Spotify, Internet.org, Dropbox, Cue,...

I can program a little and will certainly learn over summer, but not anything compared to university level. What I think to be the best skills I have are my creativity, my problem-solving mind, my level of organization, my entrepreneurship spirit, my quick thinking, my passion for what I do and my dilligency. For instance, I have founded an association with heaps of students that promotes super complex events, like music festivals for 5000 people or magazines for 20000 people. And I am proud to be the brain behind it.

What I would like was your help on whether this is a feasible project, and how should I proceed to enroll such internships. Is it that hard to be selected? And should I expect some kind of payment? Are there any programs destined for students like me and that can help me developing myself better?

Thank you!

I suggest looking at Americrops, City Year, & Student Conservation Assocation. You gain work experience & a educational stipend between $2,000-$7,000( depends how long the term you take. Some are a few weeks to a whole year.) you want to start applying to jobs/ internships BEFORE your gap year, so once you start. You’ll won’t be sitting around for a few months. I also suggest taking “CLEP” courses. You can look that up on College Board.

The internships at the tech companies you listed such as Facebook, Google, and Dropbox all pay upwards of $6000/month plus free housing, food, and relocation. They typically find interns through university recruiting though. Out of high school, unless you have connections or something amazing on your resume, it’s going to be extremely hard to get an initial phone interview.

Source: I’m interning at one of those tech companies now and all the offers I’ve received for internships are in that range.
