Internship for High School Students?

I've been looking for a summer internship for a business related position for the summer before my senior year, and its not going so well. I live in a relatively small town, so I've really just been looking for internship jobs on the web. I can take a train to Philadelphia if I got a position, but I can't really do that just to send in applications and ask for jobs. But, after sending of a bunch of emails and resumes, I've gotten no response.

My questions come in two parts. First, are their any sites or tips you guys can give me for finding an internship position? I understand about networking, but I don't really have anywhere or anyone to ask around for much help, and I'm pretty sure my guidance counselor does not provide this kind of help. I know that finding a finance or accounting internship is probably not going to happen for a high school student, but maybe something in marketing or just assistant work would be in reach.

Second, I really need something to do this summer, so if that doesn't work out, I may just apply to one of those summer programs at a school. However, I definitely preferred the idea of getting a job, because its cheaper and I feel like it would just look better on a college app. Is there any summer programs still open for registration? I know I live near UPenn, and they have one, but I think deadlines may have closed?

Yeah I’m kind of at the same situation with you. Try CIE (or CIEE, something like that). You can internship through that in Philly or through GoAbroad.com. Some of the programs (they’re all pay to, CIE to) but some of them offer stipends that can… ease the costs a bit.
I’m pretty sure it takes a while for a response and that after a 100 emails, 1 or 2 reply back. Try using contacts to get you one perhaps? Mention you’re unpaid, that always helps esp. if your just a hs student… Tho I’ve been told to never say it’s ok I’ll go unpaid if they offer u pay, cause that’s just being a jerk…

Lemme know how it works out…

I’ve gotten a few responses from just job sites like craigslist and careerbuilder, but nothing substantial yet.

Anyone else have any advice?

are you willing to shell out cash for things like career explorations? where do you live? try to look for local business organizations…

No, I’m not trying to go through a career explorations thing, I would just applied to the UPenn program.

I’ve gotten some replies by just applying through job sites like career builder, I’ve got another interview tomorrow, but I don’t really know if it will pay off. It seems I’m competing with college kids for this, and that makes it very tough.
