Any parents know where to begin to look for 'reasonably' priced housing in San Francisco for a student internship beginning early January? The internship is located not too far from the embarcadero (according to google map). Would really appreciate some input -even just where to begin. Thank you!

I'd try college/uni alumni networks if possible, or maybe through the career center. Housing in SF is very expensive but shared housing/inlaw units might be available through networking. MIght also inquire if Academy of Art Student housing is ever available on a space available basis. They have a lot of downtown dorm space for their students...

A couple of suggestions. Check out craigslist.com and make some inquiries. Second college union bb's always have a section looking for apts to share and sublet. See if you can develop a contact at USF to check this out for you.

The area near Embarcadero is highly commercial and comparatively few residential. It is also an expensive area. I would suggest looking west of Van Ness Street and try to find something very close to major bus lines. I second using craigslist.org.

Thank you for your prompt replies! If there are any other ideas, please pass them along.

papa, I haven't lived in San Francisco for 20 years so I can't offer much specific advice (except to say don't rule out East Bay).

A few questions:
How old is this student? Are there other interns that s/he could room with? Does the organization that's providing the internship have a history of out of town hires?

When my son has had internships the sponsor organization has always been the best source for tips on housing, especially if their interns often come from other parts of the country.

Another idea is to see if his/her current school has an affiliation with a bay area college that could provide housing.

papabear, we have the same dilemna. From January to mid-March, DS is doing a co-op with an architecture firm whose office is in downtown San Francisco. He has been doing the housing research, has found quite a few options--all expensive. From craigslist, he has found that all those who are subletting want full payment up front for the entire stay! Please post if you find any good options and I'll do the same.

My son had great luck with getting a temp apt in Washington DC on craigslist--then finding a permanent spot two weeks later.

He uses the keyword 'student' to find apartments with same age peers...

Be quick though!

Also check the shared housing listings on Craigslist -- the best way to get affordable housing in SF is to rent a room in a shared flat or house, and there is a lot of turnover among students and young adults, so plenty of openings. Your son can expect to pay about $500-$650/month for a private room in a reasonably safe neighborhood. Public transit is great in the city - so he doesn't need to be close to work.

Feel free to PM me about neighborhoods. I'm familiar with bus routes as well as various areas.

Thank you all for your postings and good information!! Feeling lost about where to begin, I at least have some avenues to follow now. Momrath, the student is a junior (University) and he tells me that he will be speaking with the company for whom he will be interning to ask if they have any ideas etc.- but the short time frame frightens me and I am just trying to prepare for the distinct possibility that he will have to find his own housing. Cincy gal - I will definitely let you know if I (or my son) find anything and please do the same. Calmom, when I know more and therefore know which questions to ask, I will likely take you up on your kind offer. Thanks again, everyone!

Also, if a student is willing, there are homes where temporary "empty-nesters" with current college S's or D's would be glad to room that student, but that may be more likely in the East Bay than in SF. If one is working on/near the Embarcadero, BART's a piece of cake from the East Bay.

My son has made some contacts through craigslist. If he decides to sublet from an individual, how can he be assured that everything is as stated? Should a contract be signed? How much can he be expected to pay upfront? Some sublets are asking for full payment! Comments and suggestions, please.

papabear, check your private messages.
