I'll put it up front that I'm a high school sophmore...

So this summer i'm planning on taking a summer school course (at local community college), but i probably will have a lot of other time. So i was thinking about what i should do. Perhaps a job (retail, food service, nothing fancy), local internship maybe? I'm already involve in this volunteer thing (computer data management), and I really like it. My question is, would it be better for me to look for a job or internship, or just log more hours into volunteering? Which one would college care more about? Thanks, any help would be really helpful.

It depends on what college you look at. Some colleges don't even bother to look at the employment section of the application. Many students I know don't even have anything filled out for the employment section of the Common Application and they're admitted to their reach schools. I don't think it's going to make that much of a deal to get either a job, local internship or volunteer position. However, say, if your employment section of the application was listed with various jobs that all relate to computer data management, the reviewers will see a trend and understand that you really are interested in that field. It might not be the selling point, but it shows that you put your own time and effort into a field you like.

Do whatever shows up first. If you manage to get an internship, go for it. If it doesn't come your way, it's alright since it's not going to ruin your application.
