so I'm currently a freshman in BME at washu applying for internships and research opportunities in the summer. Bad news is my fall semester GPA is pretty horrid...3.17, and a lot of internships I really want seem competitive: Yale, Cornell, the NIH, etc. However, I couldn't even find that any openings because a lot of institutes only offer these positions to upperclassmen or graduates :P

I do have family connection with the NIH, and I have 3 years of prior work experience in research labs (one of them being the National Cancer Institute, which is part of the NIH). Anyone think I have a good shot?

Over break I must have looked at 200 different internship opportunities for BME’s (or pre-meds) and maybe 5 of them allowed freshmen to apply. So I don’t know if you can apply for one of the official internships, but if you have connections through your family or your previous lab work, use those.
Or if you want to stay at WashU for the summer, find a professor in the Biomedical Engineering department or the department of Biology and Biomedical Sciences, contact them and ask to work in their lab over summer. Apply for a SURF too, its like a $4000 stipend to cover living and food.
