I am a freshman searching for internships during the summer.
I'm thinking of majoring in computer science.
However, since it's only my 1st semester, I'm only taking intro comp sci classes and therefore have very little experience/knowledge that seems to be required for all of the internships that I have found.

Does anyone know of any cs-related internships designed specifically for students just getting started in the field? or will I just have to wait til next year?
thanks!

Our DD attends Iowa State University & is a CS major. They have an amazing career fair there. She interviewed and was offered second interviews from several companies. She is working part-time now for a software company and has a great internship lined up for the summer, all as a freshman. You must work with your resources at school and take advantage of those opportunities. There will be those companies that may say, “See you next year,” but you may find a company that will take you up on your assertiveness.
Good luck!

I agree 100% with GLAW’s recommendation. The best resources is your school’s Career Center. If you miss the Fall Career Fair, make sure to attend the one that is coming up in the Spring next year. Have your resume ready (again use your school’s resources to help you write a good resume) and talk to as many companies as possible at the Career Fair. It will not be easy as a freshman, but you might find a company that gives you a chance. When my son was a freshman, he got only one offer. But that internship help him to get another internship as a sophomore, and now a summer internship in 2011 as a junior. All these internships were through his school’s Career Office and Career Fair.

I don’t remember… maybe February? The program has changed a lot since I went (two summers ago)… it is new, so always changing and evolving. If you have questions, e-mail your school recruiter - they are very helpful with the application process.

I emailed my school recruiter five days ago asking him questions. How long is it supposed to take for him to reply? Also, what date should I ideally apply by?

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a freshman or not. However, it is important to have data structures background. If you don’t have any knowledge of elementary data structures, it is unlikely that you will get an internship with a respectable tech company.
