internships in television/film industry

Hey all, I'm kinda clueless, any advice would be appreciated. I'm going to be a freshman next year at LMU's film school, majoring in screenwriting. I REALLY want to jump right into the pool of Hollywood madness, and I know internships would be great...I just have no idea where to start. I know it's crazy to want to work on a particular show right off the bat, but my ultimate dream is to work on Mad Men (well, part of the writing staff to be exact...no need to tell me it's crazy and totally impossible, I already know!). I just don't even know where to start, there are so many internships out there, I don't know whether to go through the production companies or the studios or whatever. Just basically I have no idea. Any help?

Contact the LMU film department and see if they have any advice. Just be aware that as a pre-frosh, you are the lowest of the low on the totem poll, both for them and prospective providers of intern slots: you have no experience, no coursework even… It gets much easier as time goes by. Note: “easier” doesn’t mean “easy.”

Of course, the time-honored traditional way is to have a relative in the business. Bleah.

Screenwriting major, eh? excuse me, could you please refill my coffee? :-P

Maybe try craigslist? People love free help so they’ll take you on.

Actually, just email a bunch of random corporations/movie studios. I did that and got myself a small position at an NGO in London this summer.
